{"id":477,"date":"2011-07-20T09:21:43","date_gmt":"2011-07-20T13:21:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=477"},"modified":"2011-07-20T09:21:43","modified_gmt":"2011-07-20T13:21:43","slug":"supporting-the-good-guys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2011\/07\/supporting-the-good-guys.html","title":{"rendered":"Supporting the Good Guys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI can\u2019t help being overweight,\u201d a friend told me. \u201cMy hormones are out of whack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And she is exactly right.\u00a0 I could tell without a peek at her blood work or a word with her doctor. \u00a0I\u2019ve heard that same statement so many times!\u00a0 It is always true.\u00a0 I know because when a person is overweight, there is almost always a corresponding dysfunction of hormones.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look inside our bodies again and visit our old friend, the autopilot. \u00a0<a title=\"Meet Your Autopilot\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/2011\/05\/11.html\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to learn about your autopilot.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hormones that control hunger and satiety are made to perfectly balance each other out.\u00a0 When the stomach is empty and the body is running low on readily available fuel, the hormone ghrelin kicks in.\u00a0 It carries the message from the autopilot to the conscious pilot\u00a0 (the conscious you) that it\u2019s time to refuel.\u00a0 Eat, in others words.\u00a0 \u00a0 As you eat, ghrelin backs off and the satiety hormones kick in.\u00a0 One of those is leptin, which carries the message from the autopilot to the conscious you that you\u2019ve had enough already. No need to keep eating.\u00a0 Insulin is the other satiety hormone that goes to work processing the sugar in the meal to store in the body as fat.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how it is supposed to work. The hunger hormones and the satiety hormones balance each other out.\u00a0 What happens too often with us?\u00a0 In our culture the food we eat is mostly processed, high in carbs, and full of high fructose corn syrup.\u00a0 That\u2019s a perfect recipe for messed up hormones.<\/p>\n<p>We have looked at what happens when there is consistently too much sugar in the system. \u00a0The overworked pancreas can\u2019t keep up and the satiety hormones don\u2019t work as they should.\u00a0 That leaves the hunger hormones in control.<\/p>\n<p>Have you every felt that way &#8212; that hunger is controlling you?\u00a0 You just can\u2019t seem to feel satisfied.\u00a0 Even after a meal, you are still hungry.\u00a0 The main reason that is happening is that your hunger hormones are ruling.\u00a0 You keep eating because you never feel full.\u00a0 You yearn for more of what you\u2019ve been eating &#8212; carbs and sugar.\u00a0 As you eat more, you impair your satiety hormones more.\u00a0 You feel sluggish and less alert.\u00a0 You certainly don\u2019t feel like moving.\u00a0 You burn up less and less of the available fuel. So your body packs away the extra as fat until you have a serious weight problem and, more than likely, a case of diabetes.\u00a0 The hunger army wins and you are the loser &#8212; and not in The Biggest Loser sense!<\/p>\n<p>Can this situation be reversed?\u00a0 Good news &#8212; yes, it can!\u00a0 Now that you know of the war going on inside you, you can provide reinforcements so the satiety hormones can win.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll be looking at ways to support leptin and insulin in the next few posts, so keep watching!\u00a0 In the meantime, I can give you a clue.
