{"id":309,"date":"2011-06-26T11:11:38","date_gmt":"2011-06-26T15:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=309"},"modified":"2011-06-26T11:12:24","modified_gmt":"2011-06-26T15:12:24","slug":"those-lowly-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2011\/06\/those-lowly-jobs.html","title":{"rendered":"Those Lowly Jobs&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201c<em>If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another\u2019s feet.\u201d<\/em> John 13:14<\/p>\n<p>In Bible times folks didn\u2019t get in their cars and run over to the mall.\u00a0 If they ran anywhere, they did it on their own two feet.\u00a0 Those feet would get pretty smelly and dirty walking those dusty roads in sandals.\u00a0That\u2019s why the first thing the host would do when a visitor came would be to have a servant come and wash the feet of his guest.\u00a0 I personally wouldn\u2019t want to be the servant with the foot-washing job!<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Jesus, Himself,\u00a0 washed the feet of the disciples.\u00a0 He did it for a reason &#8212; as an example for us.\u00a0 He showed us that God honors those who stoop to serve.<\/p>\n<p>Some jobs aren\u2019t so dirty.\u00a0 Speakers and teachers get honor, and singers get compliments on their specials.\u00a0 (Well, some do!)\u00a0 But the Bible isn\u2019t talking about that kind of service, though it is precious to God, too, when done in a right spirit.\u00a0 This verse is talking about the jobs no one wants.<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been stuck finishing up the dishwashing after fellowship dinner?\u00a0 Found yourself in the nursery for the third time this month?\u00a0 Showed up on work day and discovered that you have the cleaning job to yourself?\u00a0 It\u2019s tempting to grumble about how inconsiderate folks are and to feel sorry for yourself.\u00a0 Wrong!\u00a0 This is your chance to shine for God.\u00a0 He is happiest when we are cheerfully doing the stuff no one else wants to do. \u00a0 What an opportunity to please Him!<\/p>\n<p>This also means noticing when someone is sick and\/or overwhelmed and being there to lend a hand.\u00a0 A young mom may need a break &#8212; and you can help by offering to babysit.\u00a0 Providing food for the family when a mom is sick or taking home a few loads of laundry for them can be a wonderful way to wash feet.\u00a0 There are hundreds of ways to serve. \u00a0I think there is a special crown in Heaven in store for the men at church who came and helped every single time we had sewer trouble. (And for some reason, we have been afflicted a lot with that trouble.) \u00a0You can&#8217;t get much more lowly than the sewer!<\/p>\n<p>When we think of how pleasing our \u201cfoot-washing\u201d service is to God, we all ought to be looking for something lowly to do.\u00a0 We ought to be fighting for that extra spot in the nursery or rushing to be the first to grab the dish towel.\u00a0Not everyone can sing or teach or write.
