{"id":2076,"date":"2012-12-27T03:48:23","date_gmt":"2012-12-27T08:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=2076"},"modified":"2012-12-11T05:52:09","modified_gmt":"2012-12-11T10:52:09","slug":"seven-things-you-can-do-to-save-your-brain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2012\/12\/seven-things-you-can-do-to-save-your-brain.html","title":{"rendered":"Seven Things You Can Do to Save Your Brain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Exercise, cutting out sugar, eating a low glycemic diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy oils.\u00a0 So far all the tips for a youthful brain are the same as for a youthful body!\u00a0 Well, your brain is part of your body, after all.<\/p>\n<p>Just as your muscles are strengthened with exercise, your brain can become stronger by working out \u201cthe little gray cells\u201d as Agatha Christie\u2019s Poirot calls them.\u00a0How can you do that?\u00a0 Here are some suggestions I found:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Change up your schedule.<\/strong>\u00a0 We tend to get in a rut of doing the same thing the same way every single day.\u00a0 Doing something simple like taking an alternate route to work can give a little poke to the sleepy neurons in your cranium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn something new.\u00a0<\/strong> Always wanted to learn a new language?\u00a0 Learn to knit?\u00a0 Play an instrument?\u00a0 Now is the time to do it.\u00a0 Taking on a new challenge will stimulate your brain and keep it active.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be creative.\u00a0<\/strong> You don\u2019t have to win a prize with your artwork, but you can take a free course at your local hobby store.\u00a0 You can make cards, learn to decorate cakes, or take up beadwork, for example.\u00a0 Maybe you can\u2019t write a best-seller, but you can write down your life story for your children and grandchildren.\u00a0 You can write a blog. Try something new.\u00a0 You may find you like it &#8212; and your brain will start moving again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get involved.<\/strong>\u00a0 What matters to you?\u00a0 Find a way to volunteer and become active in that cause.\u00a0 You can be an advocate for children in the foster care system, help at the local homeless shelter, teach someone to read.\u00a0 The list is endless.\u00a0 There are people out there who need\u00a0 you.\u00a0 Go make a difference!\u00a0 You will feel happier, and your brain will appreciate all the new stimuli you are giving it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pay attention<\/strong>.\u00a0 Take a conscious moment to notice the things around you.\u00a0 Look for beauty in unexpected places.\u00a0 Really look at\u00a0 the people around you.
