{"id":2037,"date":"2013-01-08T03:09:19","date_gmt":"2013-01-08T08:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=2037"},"modified":"2012-12-07T10:11:42","modified_gmt":"2012-12-07T15:11:42","slug":"do-calories-count-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2013\/01\/do-calories-count-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Do Calories Count?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do calories count?<\/p>\n<p>I wish I could tell you that they don\u2019t \u2014 and that you should just forget all about the pesky things.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it isn\u2019t so. \u00a0 Any type of diet or eating plan can be sabotaged by eating too much.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that there are a multitude of other things that affect weight loss and gain.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll run out of amazing things to tell you for a very long time!\u00a0 There are lots of things you can do to help your body work for you instead of against you.<\/p>\n<p>For a start, if you haven\u2019t already read it, take a look at my \u201cautopilot\u201d post which tells one of the main reasons people gain weight.<a title=\"Meet Your Autopilot\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/2011\/05\/11.html\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to learn about your autopilot.<\/a>\u00a0By constantly giving our bodies the message to \u201cstore fat\u201d we have turned these wonderful machines of ours into champion fat producers.<\/p>\n<p>But back to calories.\u00a0 Think of it as an \u201cenergy balance.\u201d\u00a0 The food you eat is used as fuel. Any extra is stored tidily away in the cells, ready to be used to keep us running if times are lean.\u00a0 That\u2019s a wonderful plan, and our ancestors who lived in a time when food supplies were uncertain saw the benefits of that design.\u00a0 And I do mean design.\u00a0 I believed we are designed individually by a wonderful Creator who knew just what He was doing!<\/p>\n<p>But for us, the food supply is all too readily available.\u00a0 The calorie-laden goodies fairly scream at us to come eat them!\u00a0 Add that to our marvelous technology which makes us sit more than ever, and we have a serious calorie imbalance problem.<\/p>\n<p>How bad is our problem?\u00a0 If you were keeping your calories in\/calories out even and added just 12 calories a day \u2014 about three\/fourths of a Ritz cracker \u2014 you would gain a pound in a year. \u00a0 Who eats 3\/4 of a cracker?\u00a0 Eating about eight will give you an extra 13 pounds when the new year rolls around.\u00a0 And that\u2019s just a few crackers.\u00a0 Most of us can easily put away more than that \u2014 which is why about 3\/4 of Americans are overweight and nearly a third of those folks are obese.<\/p>\n<p>Now some good news!\u00a0 If you eat mostly low glycemic foods, you will be eating foods that are lower in calories.\u00a0<a title=\"Green Light\/Red Light Eating Plan\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/2011\/05\/red-lightgreen-light-the-simple-plan.html\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to learn about the Green Light\/Red Light eating plan.<\/a>\u00a0For many people it will be enough to just to go by the index and they won\u2019t have to bother with calories.
