{"id":1985,"date":"2012-12-06T09:20:30","date_gmt":"2012-12-06T14:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=1985"},"modified":"2012-11-27T07:54:24","modified_gmt":"2012-11-27T12:54:24","slug":"foods-and-drink-to-avoid-cataracts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2012\/12\/foods-and-drink-to-avoid-cataracts.html","title":{"rendered":"Foods (and Drink) to Avoid Cataracts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We already know that vitamins A, C, and E are good for your eyes. \u00a0Getting them in your diet will help prevent cataracts, among other eye ills. \u00a0The nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin also are helpful. \u00a0So are the B vitamins.<\/p>\n<p>The B vitamins, especially riboflavin and niacin, help prevent cataracts according the sites I studied.\u00a0 You can get riboflavin from lean beef and lamb, yogurt, milk, mushrooms, almonds, eggs and coffee.\u00a0 However, nearly every site cautions against caffeine for eye health, so better stick to the other sources.<\/p>\n<p>Niacin comes from tuna, chicken, salmon, turkey, anchovies, kidney beans, peanuts, and sunflower seeds.\u00a0 Of course, you can also get them from supplements &#8212; if you choose a food-based vitamin from a reputable company.<\/p>\n<p>A study with rats showed that those little critters who drank lots of tea had lower blood sugar than the non-tea-drinking rats\u00a0 (and how did they get the rats to drink tea, I wonder?).\u00a0 They also had a reduced level of glucose in the eye lens and about half the number of cataracts.\u00a0 They haven\u2019t done studies in people yet, but it makes sense to drink lots of tea.\u00a0 It won\u2019t hurt, at any rate.<\/p>\n<p>And there is an eye-drop that has been shown in several studies to reverse cataracts.\u00a0 The eyedrop contains the natural solution N-acetylcarnosine.\u00a0 Why haven\u2019t you heard about these studies?\u00a0 Because it is a natural substance available over the counter.\u00a0 Unless you have a doctor who is tuned in to holistic medicine, you won\u2019t hear about it.
