{"id":1902,"date":"2012-10-03T11:34:40","date_gmt":"2012-10-03T15:34:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=1902"},"modified":"2012-10-03T11:34:40","modified_gmt":"2012-10-03T15:34:40","slug":"foods-to-prevent-hearing-loss-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2012\/10\/foods-to-prevent-hearing-loss-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Foods to Prevent Hearing Loss #2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Getting older &#8212; how we dread it!\u00a0 However, the alternative to growing older&#8211; dying young &#8212; is not so good either.\u00a0 Don\u2019t despair.\u00a0 There are lots of things we can do to prevent the ills that befall us when we advance in years.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been talking about one of those ills &#8212; hearing loss.\u00a0 Yesterday we discussed the finding that Omega 3s and Vitamin D help prevent age-related hearing loss.\u00a0 Another study found that the B vitamin, folate, is another hearing protector.\u00a0 A study published in the<em> Journal of Nutrition<\/em> suggests that low levels of folate are associated with a 35% higher risk of hearing loss in people 50 and older.<\/p>\n<p>Why does it help?\u00a0 Evidently, it has to do with homocysteine levels.\u00a0 Folate deficiency causes homocysteine levels to increase, which could restrict blood flow to the cochlea.
