{"id":1851,"date":"2012-08-29T12:29:36","date_gmt":"2012-08-29T16:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=1851"},"modified":"2012-08-29T12:29:36","modified_gmt":"2012-08-29T16:29:36","slug":"breaking-the-failure-cycle-3-change-the-cues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2012\/08\/breaking-the-failure-cycle-3-change-the-cues.html","title":{"rendered":"Breaking the Failure Cycle #3 &#8212; Change the Cues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Habits &#8212; they have a powerful hold over us!\u00a0 How can we break the cycle that keeps us in failure?<\/p>\n<p>In our last post we talked about the pattern of cue &#8212; routine &#8212; reward.\u00a0 One way to break the cycle is to change the cue.\u00a0 If the sight of the vending machine at work always prompts you to buy a candy bar, avoid walking past the vending machine.\u00a0 If you are always tempted to eat something sugary in the middle of the afternoon, plan something else you enjoy to keep you busy during that time.<\/p>\n<p>If driving past the fast food restaurants is a cue to stop and buy dinner, change your route so you don\u2019t go past them.\u00a0 If you have to that heavily buttered, salted, and processed popcorn when you go to the movie theater, stay home and watch a dvd.\u00a0 You can make popcorn yourself in a healthy way with real butter and Himalayan pink salt.<\/p>\n<p>The availability of unhealthy foods often trigger overeating. If you don\u2019t have cookies in the cabinet, you aren\u2019t going to pig out on them. So don\u2019t buy them.\u00a0 Your kids might complain, but they don\u2019t need to eat them, either. I\u2019ve read some studies that say that high fructose corn syrup, the main sweetener in processed foods, actually lowers the IQ.\u00a0 Not to mention the fact that childhood obesity is heading toward epidemic levels.\u00a0 Keep healthy snacks like raw fruits\u00a0 and vegetables and nuts on hand for both you and your kids.
