Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain \u201cI\u2019m full.\u00a0 You can stop eating now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/files\/2012\/05\/207166_10150566829270537_758175536_18018906_565319_n19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1604\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/261\/2012\/05\/207166_10150566829270537_758175536_18018906_565319_n19-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>In our western diet we get way too much of some fats, but not nearly enough of others, like Omega 3\u2019s.\u00a0 These fatty acids are found in the greatest amount in fatty fish like tuna or salmon.\u00a0 You can also get them in walnuts, flaxseed, beans, and winter squash.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble with eating fish is the danger of mercury contamination.\u00a0 Pregnant women are now cautioned against eating fish and other folks are often warned not to eat too much. (Conflicting opinions on varying Web sites, of course.)\u00a0 The other sources don\u2019t give the amount you need, unless you eat a lot of them consistently.\u00a0 You may need a good supplement to get the amount of Omega 3 you need to boost your metabolism.<\/p>\n<p>Another word of caution.\u00a0 Most Omega 3 supplements come from &#8212; you guessed it &#8212; fish. And so the mercury contamination danger is still there.\u00a0 Frustrating I know, but we live in an extremely toxic society.\u00a0 If you want to avoid being sick and fat, you have to work at it!\u00a0 Check out the company that manufactures the supplements you are thinking about buying.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be doing a series later on vitamins and minerals and how to know if you have good ones, but in the meantime look to see what the company says about their purification process.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s expensive to produce high quality, natural vitamins and minerals, so don\u2019t bother with the cheap ones. \u00a0 I personally take an excellent Omega 3 with added D3 from a company that has the highest standards and who, unlike most supplement companies, have their own laboratory which you can actually visit.\u00a0 Graduate students from nearby universities do their internships there, and the company spends millions on research and clinical trials.
