<\/a>This speaker was funny, interesting, and spoke the truth. So why did he make me mad?\u00a0 Because he spoke on personalities.\u00a0 Most of the time he described his dreadful daughter with the obnoxious personality.\u00a0 Then he went on to describe his wonderful, sweet daughters who had pleasant personalities and added a word or two about the cold personality that needs practice being nice.<\/p>\nI was mad because I AM that difficult obnoxious daughter.\u00a0 Not really, but I have the same temperament he described.\u00a0 The one that comes off as bossy.\u00a0 The natural fighter.\u00a0 The one who wants to be in charge.<\/p>\n
It seems I spend all my time trying to manage my troublesome personality so as not to offend people.\u00a0 Suddenly, I had enough.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy do I have to be someone different than I am?\u00a0 What would it be like if I could just be ME and be okay?\u201d\u00a0 That led to a second rebellious thought.\u00a0 \u201cI am sick of trying to force my body into being something it doesn\u2019t want to be.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of eating this apple while my naturally thin husband eats a wonderful-looking Danish.\u00a0 Phooey.\u201d<\/p>\n
So in a spirit of rebellion, I bought a cheese Danish and scarfed it down before my conscience kicked in.\u00a0 Any doubt that I have that domineering, rebellious personality should be quelled by now! \u00a0Sugar is addictive, and that Danish was just like a beer would be for an alcoholic.\u00a0 Maybe one wouldn\u2019t matter, but addicts don\u2019t stop at one.\u00a0 It has taken me days to get myself back under control.<\/p>\n
The turning point came when I was looking around for a book to read in the 20 minutes I had to kill.\u00a0 I picked up one called \u201cRadical\u201d by David Platt, off Paul\u2019s desk.\u00a0 It took only a few pages to convict me and get me back on the right thinking track.<\/p>\n
Platt points out that Jesus didn\u2019t make discipleship sound alluring so big crowds would follow Him.\u00a0 He said, \u201cGive up everything.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cLeave your family behind.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cPrepare to be homeless.\u201d\u00a0 Those aren\u2019t words that mega-church builders would use. And it isn\u2019t what feel-good theologians say, either.\u00a0 Instead of focusing on \u201cYou are fine and I love you like you are,\u201d Jesus said, \u201cTake up your cross daily and follow Me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yes, I have to give up who I am.\u00a0 Yes, I have to deny myself.\u00a0 Not to win a popularity contest or to be gorgeous, but to follow Jesus and be His disciple. It isn\u2019t about me and my way.\u00a0 It\u2019s about surrender.\u00a0 A happy surrender. \u00a0As Platt says in his book, “For when we abandon the trinkets of this world and respond to the radical invitation of Jesus, we experience the infinite treasure of knowing and experiencing Him.”<\/p>\n
And that is really why I need to get my personality as well as my eating habits under control. Life — real life — is about serving Him.\u00a0 That is the source of true joy, not throwing a fit to get my way and eating pastries. \u00a0I may not be called upon to leave my home and sell my belongings — but I AM called to put all I am and have at the disposal of my Master. \u00a0And what a small price compared to knowing Him!<\/p>\n
So now I am happily back on the path — and already feeling better. I always forget how lack of exercise and eating sugary stuff makes me feel lethargic and depressed.\u00a0 And how much happier I am focused on Him, instead of me!<\/p>\n
