{"id":1009,"date":"2011-11-16T10:46:15","date_gmt":"2011-11-16T15:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=1009"},"modified":"2011-11-16T10:47:25","modified_gmt":"2011-11-16T15:47:25","slug":"why-does-salt-make-us-so-puffy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2011\/11\/why-does-salt-make-us-so-puffy.html","title":{"rendered":"Why Does Salt Make Us so Puffy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You need salt to stay alive &#8212; so why does a can of Pringles make you swell up like a toad?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/files\/2011\/11\/207166_10150566829270537_758175536_18018906_565319_n7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1011\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/261\/2011\/11\/207166_10150566829270537_758175536_18018906_565319_n7-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The answer lies in the kind of salt we use in our society.\u00a0 Most of our salt is mined and then heavily processed.\u00a0 The naturally-occurring minerals are stripped out and sold to vitamin companies.\u00a0 It is chemically cleaned and processed and then doctored with iodine and flouride and anti-clumping agents.\u00a0 It takes a lot of water to neutralize and get rid of these harmful chemicals.\u00a0 If your body doesn\u2019t get enough water, it takes it from the surrounding cells, messing up your whole fluid balance.\u00a0 Your cells are limping along on empty and fluid is puffing up other areas as your body is trying to get rid of the extra stuff.\u00a0 Since about 90% of the American diet is processed and heavily salted before it gets to our plates, we have a potential health issue on our hands.<\/p>\n<p>What can you do?\u00a0 Look for natural salt options.\u00a0 Sea salt is a better choice, although the oceans are so polluted now that it takes a lot of processing to clean up the contaminants.<\/p>\n<p>Himalayan salt &#8212; which is not necessarily from the Himalayan salt caves, although it does come from that part of the world &#8212; is a clean option.\u00a0 It also provides the minerals your body needs since they haven\u2019t been stripped out.\u00a0 Those same minerals make it really tasty as well!\u00a0 Don\u2019t be surprised to find that it looks pinkish instead of white.\u00a0 Those are the minerals you are seeing &#8212; minerals your body is craving.<\/p>\n<p>If clean, healthy options aren\u2019t available to you, do your best to go easy on the salt.\u00a0 Avoid processed foods whenever possible and try substituting other seasonings in cooking.<\/p>\n<p>And say goodbye to the potato chips.
