As I mentioned in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/blogs\/beyondblue\/2007\/03\/reader-response-recovery-inc-and-my.html\">earlier post<\/a>, my great aunt GiGi, who was one of my mental health heroes, owed her life to <a href=\"http:\/\/recovery-inc.org\">Recovery Inc.<\/a> and she would occasionally share with me nuggets of its wisdom, like the following tools, quoted or adapted from <a href=\"http:\/\/recovery-inc.org\/resources\/low.html\">Dr. Abraham Low&#8217;s<\/a> writing:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Treat mental health as a business and not as a game <br \/>\u2022 Humor is our best friend, temper is our worst enemy <br \/>\u2022 If you can&#8217;t change an event you can change your attitude towards it<br \/>\u2022 Be self-led, not symptom-led<br \/>\u2022 Symptoms are distressing but not dangerous<br \/>\u2022 Temper is the intellectual blindness to the other side of the story<br \/>\u2022 Comfort is a want, not a need <br \/>\u2022 There is no right or wrong in the trivialities of every day <br \/>\u2022 Calm begets calm, temper begets temper<br \/>\u2022 Don&#8217;t take our own dear selves too seriously<br \/>\u2022 Feelings should be expressed and temper suppressed<br \/>\u2022 Helplessness is not hopelessness<br \/>\u2022 Some people have a passion for self-distrust<br \/>\u2022 Temper maintains and intensifies symptoms<br \/>\u2022 Do things in part acts<br \/>\u2022 Endorse for the effort, not only for the performance<br \/>\u2022 Have the courage to make a mistake<br \/>\u2022 Feelings are not facts<br \/>\u2022 Do the things you fear and hate to do<br \/>\u2022 Fear is a belief \u2013\u2013 beliefs can be changed<br \/>\u2022 Every measure of self-control leads to a measure of self-respect and  ultimately self-confidence<br \/>\u2022 Decide, plan, and act <br \/>\u2022 A firm decision steadies us <br \/>\u2022 Anticipation is often worse than realization<br \/>\u2022 Replace an insecure thought with a secure thought<br \/>\u2022 Bear the discomfort in order to gain comfort<br \/>\u2022 Hurt feelings are just beliefs not shared<br \/>\u2022 Lower your standards and your performance will rise<br \/>\u2022 Things happen by chance and not by choice<br \/>\u2022 People do things that annoy us, not to annoy us<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks so much to reader Peg, for steering me to Recovery Inc.&#8217;s Tool Box!
