Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/episodes\/january-13-2012\/mass-incarceration\/10091\/\" target=\"_blank\">this story from Religion &amp; Ethics Newsweekly <\/a>about how mandatory sentencing for drug crimes and non-violent offenses has created &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/video.pbs.org\/video\/2186573602\/\" target=\"_blank\">The New Jim Crow<\/a>&#8221; system in America, in that something like half of all adult black men in Chicago and other big cities now have criminal records.<\/p>\n<p>Better late than never, I found an intriguing parallel in these two Sunday New York Times stories:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/15\/world\/middleeast\/israel-faces-crisis-over-role-of-ultra-orthodox-in-society.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\">Israelis Facing a Seismic Shift Over the Role of Women: <\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At a time when there is no progress on the <a title=\"More articles about Palestinians.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/subjects\/p\/palestinians\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\">Palestinian<\/a> dispute, Israelis are turning inward and discovering that an issue they had neglected \u2014 the place of the ultra-Orthodox Jews \u2014 has erupted into a crisis.<\/p>\n<p>And it is centered on women.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/15\/us\/politics\/conservative-religious-leaders-seeking-unity-vote-to-back-rick-santorum.html\" target=\"_blank\">Evangelicals, Seeking Unity, Back Santorum<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Evangelical leaders, along with many other components of the conservative movement, have been fractured over the race, which contributed to Mr. Romney\u2019s success in Iowa and New Hampshire.
