And certainly the compressed form, the emphasis on experience and <em>now<\/em>, are very much in keeping with Buddhism. As are many of the early practitioners: Buson, Issa, Bash\u014d.<\/p>\n<p>So I thought today it would be good to visit with at least one of the masters. Take a short trip down Haiku Road, as it were (I couldn&#8217;t resist).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one of my very favourites, by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kobayashi_Issa\" target=\"_blank\">Issa<\/a>. It says &#8216;contemporary Buddhist&#8217; better than anything since his time, the 18th century.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8259\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8259\" style=\"width: 119px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/239\/2014\/04\/Issa1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8259 \" alt=\"Issa\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/239\/2014\/04\/Issa1.jpg\" width=\"119\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8259\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Issa&#8217;s portrait, Muramatsu Shunpo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i>\u00a0\u00a0 All the time I pray to Buddha<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I keep on\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0\u00a0 killing mosquitoes.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The conflict between what I know about Buddhism &#8212; do no harm, cherish all life &#8212; and everyday life is nowhere clearer. And that, to me, is the best part of poetry: it reminds you what you already know.<\/p>\n<p>Which is a premise at the heart of Buddhism: you already <em>are<\/em> a Buddha.
