I want to know about the &#8216;actual&#8217; history &#8212; who, when, where, why. But I also want to know the foods, the music, the arts and the weather and the names of birds that sing outside the window.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>So it&#8217;s a lovely afternoon in Makawao, and I&#8217;m scrolling through websites, looking for poems by and \/or about Hawai&#8217;i. \u00a0This is one of several I find (courtesy\u00a0of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiibookblog.com\/poem-in-your-pocket\/\">Poem in Your Pocket Hawai&#8217;i Edition <\/a>site).<\/p>\n<p>Domestic violence is a huge problem in Maui, as it is in many places with huge divides between haves &amp; have-nots. As it is among many victims of racism &amp; classism and other isms. And children are always the collateral damage&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s &#8216;Wrecks&#8217; by Tyler Miranda. The structure &amp; syntax owe a debt to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyeofhawaii.com\/Pidgin\/pidgin.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Pidgin<\/a>, the Hawai&#8217;ian Creole language shaped by the island&#8217;s diverse speakers:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><b>Wrecks<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"lyrics\">Outside our house on P\u016bp\u016b Street,<br \/>\nI play with my Star Wars figures.<br \/>\nI went cut holes in the Styrofoam Big Mac container,<br \/>\nmake space ship, ah.<br \/>\nHo, I make Luke Skywalker fly all around,<br \/>\nDarth Vader no can catch him.<br \/>\nMy father, he yelling at my mother again.<br \/>\nBut me, I just keep playing,<br \/>\npretend I get deaf ear.<br \/>\nLuke, he the best pilot in the galaxy,<br \/>\nfly around the tree,<br \/>\nover the flower bed,<br \/>\nthrough the rose bushes.<br \/>\nLuke, he fly across the yard,<br \/>\nhe think he lost Darth Vader,<br \/>\nbut then, lasers start shooting at him.<br \/>\nHe make any kine moves for dodge the blasts.<br \/>\nCan hear my mother yelling at my father now,<br \/>\nshe asking him for put something back.<br \/>\nLuke, he turn around and fly straight into Darth Vader&#8217;s ship,<br \/>\ncan hear glass breaking,<br \/>\nthen my father come out of the house,<br \/>\npunching the screen door open<br \/>\nand fling my mother&#8217;s bird on the ground.<br \/>\nThe buggah went skip on the concrete,<br \/>\nlook like one pebble on water.<br \/>\nI look at my father,<br \/>\ncan hear my mother crying inside,<br \/>\nhe look at me,<br \/>\nI get one smashed Styrofoam spaceship in one hand,<br \/>\nLuke&#8217;s undamaged one in the other.<br \/>\nHis eyes come small,<br \/>\nlooking straight at me he say,<br \/>\n&#8220;That fuckah never going fly around my house again.<br \/>\nShit on everything.<br \/>\nFricken bird.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe look at me little bit more,<br \/>\nno blink,<br \/>\nhis tongue digging the inside of his mouth.<br \/>\nMy mother start cussing at him from inside the house,<br \/>\nhe go back inside,<br \/>\nready for continue the battle.<br \/>\nMe, I go look at my mother&#8217;s bird,<br \/>\nall hamajang,<br \/>\nthe wings spread,<br \/>\nthe head crooked to the left&#8211;<br \/>\nstill twitching.<br \/>\nMy stomach come all funny kine,<br \/>\nlike when I like beef with somebody at school.<br \/>\nI start making fists,<br \/>\nthe Styrofoam space ships popping between my fingers,<br \/>\nmy hands shaking.<br \/>\nBefore I could stop,<br \/>\nI went fly my spaceships across the yard.<br \/>\nWent get stuck in the rose bushes.<br \/>\nI looked down at my mother&#8217;s bird,<br \/>\nthe thing stop moving,<br \/>\nthe feet all curl,<br \/>\nget feather skid marks<br \/>\nand blood on the concrete.<br \/>\nI touch the wings and think,<br \/>\nat least you had one chance for fly.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m the kind of traveler who immerses herself &#8212; as far it&#8217;s possible &#8212; in the history of the places I visit.
