{"id":1124,"date":"2014-08-24T09:25:48","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T13:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/attheintersectionoffaithandculture\/?p=1124"},"modified":"2014-08-24T09:25:48","modified_gmt":"2014-08-24T13:25:48","slug":"libertarians-and-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/attheintersectionoffaithandculture\/2014\/08\/libertarians-and-racism.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Libertarians&#8221; and &#8220;Racism&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the shooting death of a young black man by a white Ferguson, Missouri police officer, it is to no one\u2019s surprise that the usual suspects on the left are screaming \u201cracism\u201d from the rooftops.<\/p>\n<p>Infinitely more disturbing for the lover of liberty is that ever growing legions of \u201clibertarians\u201d are regurgitating this same talking point.\u00a0 Moreover, the libertarian\u2019s obsession with \u201cthe State\u201d has endowed him with boundless sympathy for the hordes of violent black criminals that have been violating every principle that he claims to hold sacred while attributing the assault against civilization on display in Ferguson to \u201cthe militarization\u201d of the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaleo-libertarian\u201d and long-standing <em>World Net Daily <\/em>writer, Ilana Mercer, takes to task Paul Craig Roberts, who recently suggested that \u201cracism\u201d may very well play a role in accounting for why so many whites are inclined to think that the shooting was justified.\u00a0 In her own inimitable way, Mercer puts this line out to pasture by noting it for the \u201cnonsense\u201d and \u201cbullshit\u201d that it is.<\/p>\n<p>There could be any number of reasons for why white Americans are disposed to sympathize with the decorated police officer for whose death the rioters are now calling, Mercer notes. Among such reasons, she remarks, is that these \u201cordinary Americans who Paul Craig Roberts maligns as likely racists\u2026have simply experienced \u2018black crime\u2019 first hand, or are fearful of experiencing \u2018black-on-white\u2019 violence in all its ferocity [.]\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some remarks are in order here.<\/p>\n<p>First, anyone who is interested in thinking clearly and honestly <em>must<\/em> realize that \u201cracism\u201d is the rhetorical ware of bumper stickers and t-shirts: Because it means\u2014and is <em>intended <\/em>to mean\u2014all things to all people, it has become <em>meaningless.\u00a0 <\/em>All that we do know is that \u201cracism\u201d is a <em>dreadful, <\/em>probably <em>the most <\/em>dreadfulthing, of which a <em>white <\/em>person can be accused.<\/p>\n<p>To be called a \u201cracist,\u201d then, is like being called a \u201ccreep\u201d or a \u201cjerk,\u201d only much, much worse.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, no one knows <em>why <\/em>it\u2019s supposed to be so terrible to be a \u201cracist.\u201d\u00a0 In and of itself, a \u201cracist\u201d could signify someone who has a special place in his heart, a certain partiality, toward the members of his own race. Yet such affection for the members of one\u2019s race no more betrays a weakness in one\u2019s character than does a fondness for one\u2019s family or one\u2019s nation.<\/p>\n<p>May not \u201cracism\u201d be the moral equivalent to \u201cfamily-ism\u201d or \u201cpatriotism?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However we choose to slice and dice this matter, the point is that \u201cracism\u201d is a vapid term that any thoughtful person should\u2019ve abandoned long ago.<\/p>\n<p>But there is another reason why this silly word should never spring from the lips of any self-professed lover of liberty: the word isn\u2019t just <em>silly, <\/em>it is <em>dangerous.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In fact, \u201cracism\u201d has proven to be more inimical to liberty in our time than has any other.<\/p>\n<p>It is under the pretext of combating \u201cracism,\u201d after all, that freedom of association, private property rights, \u201c\u2019states\u2019 rights\u201d\u2014comprehensively, the principle of \u201cequality under the law\u201d\u2014have been decisively routed.\u00a0 Our <em>national<\/em> government has all but revoked the <em>federal<\/em> government ratified by our Founders.\u00a0 To no slight measure, this has occurred in the name of securing \u201cracial equality\u201d (while generating more <em>inequality<\/em> than ever).<\/p>\n<p>In fueling the notion that, to this day, white America remains consumed by \u201cracism,\u201d self-avowed \u201clibertarians,\u201d whether they realize it or not, hasten liberty\u2019s extinction by exacerbating the steady impulse toward ever greater concentrations of power.<\/p>\n<p>The verdict is unambiguous: Incessant chirping over \u201cracism\u201d is inimical to both good sense and freedom alike.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the shooting death of a young black man by a white Ferguson, Missouri police officer, it is to no one\u2019s surprise that the usual suspects on the left are screaming \u201cracism\u201d from the rooftops.
