If there\u2019s any truth to this\u2014and, tragically, it appears that there most certainly is\u2014then there is but one conclusion left for any remotely sober person to draw:<\/p>\n
The Republican Party is politically suicidal.<\/p>\n
It is nothing short of incredible that anyone who isn\u2019t one of its arch foes should even consider, <\/i>much less desire, <\/i>a Bush, any <\/i>Bush, to so much as be associated with the GOP, to say nothing of becoming its standard bearer.\u00a0 If Republicans knew what was good for them, they would avoid like the plague anyone with a name that merely sounded like Bush.<\/p>\n
To be certain, a wish for Jeb Bush to lead the GOP is a death wish.<\/p>\n
First, the damage that George W. Bush inflicted upon the Republican brand can\u2019t be overstated.\u00a0 Barack Obama is terrible for this country, for sure.\u00a0 As we enter into the sixth year of his seemingly endless tenure in office, it is as easy for Republicans to forget just how unpopular Bush II was when he left office as it is easy for them to ignore the fact that Americans still blame him for involving their country in two unnecessary, protracted wars while sliding it into a recession.<\/p>\n
Granted, resentment toward the 43rd<\/sup> president is no longer as intense as it once was.\u00a0 However, with another Bush looking to take the White House in 2016, it is nothing less than a foregone conclusion that old feelings will return with a vengeance the likes of which haven\u2019t been seen since 2006 and 2008.<\/p>\n Secondly, as the political climate has changed over the last few years, so too has the temperament of the rank and file, the base, of the Republican Party.\u00a0 To put it simply, for the impulse toward so-called \u201cmoderate\u201d candidates for which the GOP has become known, legions of traditional Republican voters in this Age of Obama have unmitigated contempt.<\/p>\n And Jeb Bush typifies the Republican \u201cmoderate.\u201d<\/p>\n In 2008, after years of being insulted by John McCain\u2014a Republican, recall, whom the leftist media endlessly praised for being a \u201cmaverick\u201d until he dared to run against Obama\u2014some 3 million Republicans decided they simply could not <\/i>in good conscience vote for him in that year\u2019s presidential election.<\/p>\n Even more telling, four years later, after <\/i>President Obama had an entire term to reveal his identity to the nation, one million more <\/i>Republican voters than refrained from voting for McCain refrained from voting for \u201cmoderate\u201d Mitt Romney.<\/p>\n If Jeb Bush is the party\u2019s nominee, you can take it to the bank that the GOP will continue to hemorrhage voters in 2016.<\/p>\n In fact, we can go even further: It isn\u2019t in the least implausible to suspect that if Jeb Bush is even in the presidential primaries <\/i>it will come at a considerable, possibly prohibitive, cost to Republicans.<\/p>\n Not only will scores of GOP voters take this as proof that, for all of their party\u2019s conservative talk at election time, it still, even now, after eight years of Obama, isn\u2019t willing to walk the walk; they will take it as proof as well that they are being manipulated and taken for granted by their own party heads.<\/p>\n Moreover, the left-wing press will have a field day exploiting the news that Republicans want to let loose another Bush on the country.\u00a0 There is (relatively) little mention of Bush II these days.
