{"id":1050,"date":"2014-03-22T21:05:28","date_gmt":"2014-03-23T01:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/attheintersectionoffaithandculture\/?p=1050"},"modified":"2014-03-22T21:05:28","modified_gmt":"2014-03-23T01:05:28","slug":"the-freedom-agenda-and-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/attheintersectionoffaithandculture\/2014\/03\/the-freedom-agenda-and-iraq.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The Freedom Agenda&#8221; and Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Neoconservatives\u2014meaning every self-avowed \u201cconservative\u201d who also supported the Iraq War\u2014assured us some years ago that the war in Iraq had been won following \u201cthe surge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, years prior to this they assured us that the war would be \u201ca cakewalk.\u201d\u00a0 Eleven years later, however, these remarks can\u2019t but strike even the most prejudiced of observers as patently, even astonishingly, absurd, the utterances of men and women who are either grossly incompetent or out and out liars.<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of America\u2019s invasion of Iraq, the latter today is indeed a \u201cdemocratic\u201d state.\u00a0 But it is also an <i>Islamic <\/i>one. And it is a place where blood continues to spill in the streets.<\/p>\n<p>Ilana Mercer reminds readers of this when she alludes to the latest findings of the United Nations Assistance Mission to Iraq (UNAMI).\u00a0 \u00a0The organization found that last month alone \u201ca total of 703 Iraqis were killed and another 1,381 were injured in acts of terrorism and violence [.]\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And these numbers do <i>not <\/i>include the casualties coming out of the province Anbar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to information obtained by UNAMI from the Health Committee of the Provincial Council of Anbar, the total civilian causalities in Anbar in February was 298 killed and 1198 injured, with 189 killed and 550 injured in Ramadi and 109 killed 648 injured in Fallujah.\u201d \u00a0But because \u201cUNAMI\u201d has not been \u201cable to independently verify these figures nor account for the status of those killed and injured as civilians,\u201d the casualties in Anbar province are \u201cextracted separately [.]\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is, or at least should be, a scandal of epic proportions for those who endorsed this war as part of a global \u201cFreedom Agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet it is not, and the neoconservatives who enthusiastically promoted Big Government to support <i>this <\/i>disaster have simply availed themselves of the catch-all excuse upon which Big Government enthusiasts of various stripes have been relying to explain away all\u00a0 government-induced disasters: It could\u2019ve worked, but it wasn\u2019t done correctly, we didn\u2019t give it enough time, blah, blah, blah.<\/p>\n<p>The thing of it is, neoconservative Republicans don\u2019t seem to have learned a thing from this colossal mistake, a wildly foolish, reckless judgment that has left tens of thousands of human beings dead and even more maimed and displaced.\u00a0 Even now, they seem eager to feed into a caricature of themselves as warmongers by continuing to mock \u201cisolationists\u201d while showcasing the John McCains and Lindsay Grahams of the GOP every time an international disturbance of one sort or other erupts.<\/p>\n<p>If Democrats weren\u2019t worse, the GOP would be retired come this November.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Neoconservatives\u2014meaning every self-avowed \u201cconservative\u201d who also supported the Iraq War\u2014assured us some years ago that the war in Iraq had been won following \u201cthe surge.\u201d Of course, years prior to this they assured us that the war would be \u201ca cakewalk.\u201d\u00a0 Eleven years later, however, these remarks can\u2019t but strike even the most prejudiced of&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":399,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1050","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>&quot;The Freedom Agenda&quot;
