{"id":1297,"date":"2013-12-09T05:27:42","date_gmt":"2013-12-09T05:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/areasontosmile\/?p=1297"},"modified":"2013-12-09T05:27:42","modified_gmt":"2013-12-09T05:27:42","slug":"why-you-cant-sleep-at-night-and-how-to-fix-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/areasontosmile\/2013\/12\/why-you-cant-sleep-at-night-and-how-to-fix-it.html","title":{"rendered":"Why you can\u2019t sleep at night, and how to fix it."},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1298\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1298\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookofjoe.com\/images\/2008\/12\/05\/po0oii_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1298\" alt=\"Does this seem familiar?\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/304\/2013\/12\/po0oii_2-300x275.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Does this seem familiar?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/about.me\/bdavewalters\">Coaching work<\/a>, one of the most common complaints I hear is of people not being able to sleep at night.\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s not being able to fall asleep, stay asleep, or not being able to get your mind to quiet down, there are a few things you can do to help fix it pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p>We are \u00a0assuming you&#8217;ve taken care of the simple things, like not having caffeine or exercising too close to bed time.\u00a0 And of course, a glass of red wine before bed might solve your problem automatically!\u00a0 However, assuming you&#8217;ve already taken care of the simple things there are a relatively small number of things that can keep you awake at night.<\/p>\n<p>Before we begin, it\u2019s important to remember a very important detail about sleeping: On your way to sleep, and immediately when you wake up, are the two best times to influence your subconscious mind.\u00a0 It\u2019s when your innermost self is the easiest to reach, and most easily influenced.\u00a0 It\u2019s the absolute best time to\u00a0<a title=\"Mastering the Law of Attraction; Or, creating what you *really* want! (VIDEO)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/areasontosmile\/2011\/10\/mastering-the-law-of-attraction-or-creating-what-you-really-want-video.html\" target=\"_blank\">make use of the Law of Attraction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2026what do most people think about on their way to sleep? What do you think about on your way to sleep?\u00a0 Probably fears, worries, anxieties, and generally what you *don\u2019t* want!<\/p>\n<p>So the first step is simple, so simple that it\u2019s easy to overlook: Give yourself permission to sleep peacefully. Consciously direct your thoughts to good things as you lay in bed. Make it your intention to fall asleep quickly, and sleep through the night. If there is something you\u2019re trying to attract, this is the absolutely best time to think about it.\u00a0 Just let your mind linger on how good it will feel when it arrives, but if you find your thoughts shifting to worry or impatience, think about something else instead.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t manage positive thoughts, at least focus on non-negative ones; sports you enjoy, movies you like, songs you enjoy, things like that.<\/p>\n<p>Next, learn how to meditate if you don\u2019t know how to already.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you a secret: One of the main reasons why you should never meditate laying down is because it\u2019s so easy to fall asleep. Any sort of visualization slips you into the same state of mind that usually leads to sleeping.\u00a0 However, since the entire point is going to sleep, laying down while you do it works pretty well!\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/ramanrwjve0uoea\/The%20Inner%20Universe%20Meditation%20%20As%20The%20Gateway%20To%20God.mp3\">I have recorded a meditation you<\/a>\u00a0can use not only to fall asleep easily, but to program your dreams or answer any and all questions you might have.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the last step is also simple, but it\u2019s not easy: Figure out who it is that you need to forgive, and what it is that you need to release.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you another secret: Just because a thought pops into your mind, doesn&#8217;t mean you have to believe it. Look at everything that runs through your mind like someone else is talking to you; just like you wouldn&#8217;t let the ramblings of a crazy person on the street damage your calm, you don\u2019t have to let your idle thoughts bother you, either.\u00a0\u00a0 However, your subconscious mind is on your side, and in their own way all your thought, dreams, and emotions, are trying to help you.<\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s someone you can\u2019t stop thinking about,\u00a0<a title=\"How to Trust; Or, how to Forgive (VIDEO)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/areasontosmile\/2011\/11\/how-to-trust-or-how-to-forgive-video.html\" target=\"_blank\">have you forgiven them for what they did, or did not do<\/a>? As always, forgiveness doesn&#8217;t mean you are saying what they did or didn&#8217;t do was OK; maybe it\u2019s NOT OK.\u00a0 Forgiveness simply means releasing your negativity and resentment, it\u2019s something you do for yourself, not for anyone else.\u00a0 If there\u2019s something you regret, have you forgiven yourself for it yet?\u00a0 If you did your best, have learned something, and hopefully tried to make amends, what else is there?\u00a0 Like I said at the beginning, the first step is giving yourself permission to sleep.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t release your regrets, you\u2019re going to have a hard time finding peace.<\/p>\n<p>But I have good news for you: You deserve peace. You deserve rest, and you deserve to wake up every morning rested and happy.\u00a0 And if you follow these few simple steps, it will show up for you faster than you can possibly imagine.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
