{"id":761,"date":"2011-02-01T12:03:22","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T12:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2011\/02\/abortion-slavery-and-women.html"},"modified":"2011-02-01T12:03:22","modified_gmt":"2011-02-01T12:03:22","slug":"abortion-slavery-and-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2011\/02\/abortion-slavery-and-women.html","title":{"rendered":"Abortion, Slavery, and Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\">One of the most<br \/>\ndeeply rooted differences between almost every Pagan and conservative Christians is<br \/>\nour diametrically opposed views of women and the feminine.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;We exalt the feminine as Sacred, they denigrate it as spiritually inferior to their male deity. &nbsp;Women are equal to men, and not just because they can act as men, but because feminine values are equal to masculine ones. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\"><span>The differences are not simply theological, for they spill over into how women are treated in this society.<\/span><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span>For example, former Blue Dog Senator<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/metro\/content\/shared-blogs\/ajc\/politicalinsider\/entries\/2007\/03\/09\/says_zell_military_shortages_s.html\">Zell Miller <\/a><span style=\"color:black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/metro\/content\/shared-blogs\/ajc\/politicalinsider\/entries\/2007\/03\/09\/says_zell_military_shortages_s.html\">explained<\/a> that absent abortion we&#8217;d have<br \/>\nmore soldiers to fight and die in wars and more Americans to do the minimally<br \/>\npaid jobs that Mexican laborers seek when they come here to work.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Miller was giving these as <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:black\"><i>positive <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color:black\">reasons<br \/>\nfor abolishing abortion. &nbsp;T<\/span>he so-called &#8220;pro-life&#8221; contingent&nbsp;<i>mostly&nbsp;<\/i><span style=\"font-style: normal\">honors unborn life and happily sacrifices actually living human beings to corporate, military, and ecclesiastical priorities.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Current NeoConfederate Republican and Blue<br \/>\nDog efforts to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/archives\/individual\/2011_01\/027742.php\">re-define rap<\/a>e in a way to eliminate it in some serious cases, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/02\/01\/whats-behind-the-drive-to-redefine-rape_n_816967.html\">maybe in a great many<\/a>, &nbsp;makes me think it is time to touch on these issues again. The current effort by Rick Santorum and the right in general to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0111\/47881.html\">redefine abortion as like slavery <\/a>underscore the need to do so. And in case anyone misunderstood, <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2011\/01\/santorum-doubles-down-obama-refuses-to-see-how-abortions-violate-civil-rights-like-slavery-did.php\">he emphasized it.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\">They are doing<br \/>\nthis in a bill submitted by Republican and Blue Dog degenerates to deprive<br \/>\nwomen of still more control over their bodies and lives.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Along the way the right is rolling out<br \/>\na new lie regarding the issue: the fetus is like a slave and abortion is like<br \/>\nslavery.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bluewavenews.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/23\/abortion-abolitionists-are-really-advocating-slavery-for-women\/\">Leanne at<br \/>\nBluewavenews commented<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\"><span style=\"color:#1A1A1A\">&#8230;somehow, in the minds of<br \/>\nthe anti-choice crowd, granting the woman autonomy over her own life and body<br \/>\nis more like slavery for a fetus than is forcing that woman to undergo an<br \/>\nunwanted pregnancy, to deliver an unwanted baby, and to deal with the<br \/>\nsubsequent changes to her body for the rest of her life. Ending an unwanted<br \/>\npregnancy is supposedly slavery, while requiring a woman to carry an unwanted<br \/>\nfetus to term is not.&#8221; <\/span>That adult human beings can argue this is a sad<br \/>\ncommentary on the utter collapse of morality and reason on the political right.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\">At first it seemed<br \/>\nto me the logic here is akin to arguing an apple is like a lego and an apple<br \/>\npie is like a lego car.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But it is<br \/>\nactually far worse than that, for as blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/speakerscorneratx.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/24\/equating-slavery-and-abortion-where-are-the-women-in-this-story\/\">scatx pointed out, <\/a>the right has<br \/>\nactually taken the position of the slave holder towards his slave in arguing<br \/>\nagainst abortion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\">If you do take the time to understand the intertwined history of abortion and slavery, it becomes painfully difficult to assert that abortion is wrong. &nbsp;Because then you must defend the slaveholder who wanted the enslaved women to birth that child so that he could enslave them both (even as he probably used religion and morality, rather than economics and labor, as his excuse and defense for why one shouldn&#8217;t turn to abortion.) Who would be willing to fault the enslaved woman who aborted her fetus because she didn&#8217;t want that child to be a slave? &nbsp;Who would be willing to fault the enslaved woman who aborted her fetus because she physically could not bear the burder of labor and pregnancy? &nbsp;Who would be willing to fault the enslaved woman who aborted her fetus as a punishment to the man who raped her, barely fed her, barely clothed her, denied her religion, denied her liberty, and whipped her when she worked too slowly, made a mistake, or attempted to flee? &nbsp;Who would be willing to fault the enslaved woman who aborted her fetus to protect her life and to save the evils of her life from those of her child? &nbsp;To include the history of enslaved women in the history of slavery and then compare that history to abortion is not easy<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\">When conservative anti-choice advocates make that comparison, they actively erase the enslaved women from that past, from her own history. &nbsp;This is similar to their larger approach on the issue: erasing women from the discussion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:21.0pt\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\">Scatx&#8217;s entire<br \/>\npost is a long one, well worth reading for those interested in getting an in-depth understanding of this issue.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;One reason &#8220;social conservatives&#8221; will ignore it. &nbsp;<\/span>It also makes clear the genuine depravity of those using &#8220;Abortion<br \/>\nis slavery&#8221; rhetoric. &nbsp;Read it and come back wiser. Another reason they will ignore it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%\">Ta-Nehisi Coates,<br \/>\nwho has more insight in his occasional hangnail that Rick Santorum has in his<br \/>\nentire head,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national\/archive\/2010\/08\/you-are-not-harriet-tubman\/60864\/\"> observed<\/a> &#8220;<span style=\"color:#1A1A1A\">If you&#8217;re going to compare<br \/>\nabortion and slavery, then, by God, understand that whereas mothers choose<br \/>\nevery day whether to bring children to term, no slave-master ever chose to have<br \/>\nhis slave escape.
