{"id":735,"date":"2010-12-23T21:20:45","date_gmt":"2010-12-23T21:20:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2010\/12\/magick-and-doing-good.html"},"modified":"2010-12-23T21:20:45","modified_gmt":"2010-12-23T21:20:45","slug":"magick-and-doing-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2010\/12\/magick-and-doing-good.html","title":{"rendered":"Magick and &#8220;doing good&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">Just before Yule one of my readers<br \/>\nasked me to explain why I was not more interested in working magick on big<br \/>\nissues, such as stopping global warming or bringing about more enlightenment in<br \/>\npublic policy.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>He said he planned<br \/>\nto do such things up till the Solstice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">For that reason I did not<br \/>\nimmediately reply. More power to him.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">If magick works, and I believe that<br \/>\nit can, one requirement is that the magician&#8217;s will be as pure, focused, and<br \/>\nwithout any waver in believing that the goal is possible.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Any good to come from my reader&#8217;s work would not be helped by<br \/>\nmy skepticism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">But the Solstice is past now, and<br \/>\nso I&#8217;ll give my answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">My working definition of magick is<br \/>\n&#8220;the non-coincidental accumulation of meaningful coincidences.&#8221;<span>&nbsp;Which means we never know for sure. &nbsp;Sometimes a tossed coin will come up a dozen times in a row and <\/span><i>not<\/i><span> violate probability. &nbsp;Just not very often.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">In the physical realm I believe<br \/>\nmagick works best by empowering a small change that will have progressively<br \/>\nbigger impacts down the line.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Our<br \/>\nminds are powerful, but so is the resistance of physical reality to mental<br \/>\nphenomena.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>And we are working<br \/>\nwithin a sea of psychic noise.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Spectacular effects simply seem outside the realm of human possibility<br \/>\nto me, and if some humans have attained such capacities they are wise enough to<br \/>\nmake sure they remain unknown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><b>The Harmonic Connvergence<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">I know of one major wonderful and<br \/>\ncompletely unanticipated event that followed a worldwide meditational effort at<br \/>\nencouraging change for the better.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>In August 1987 people worldwide, mostly New Age in their sympathies, all<br \/>\nmeditated on world peace and related issues.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>There were maybe 20,000 involved.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>None of the promised UFO sightings and such happened.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">I was one of the skeptics who<br \/>\ncalled it the &#8220;moronic convergence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">In June, 1988, Lithuania started<br \/>\nthe series of events that led to the collapse of communist rule in Europe and<br \/>\nits transformation elsewhere. The collapse of a despotic state that encompassed<br \/>\nmuch of Europe and Asia happened within two years as the pressures for its<br \/>\ndissolution built.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Was there any<br \/>\nconnection?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">Mikhail Gorbachev became General<br \/>\nSecretary of the USSR in 1985.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>His<br \/>\nextraordinary unwillingness to enforce control violently (I wish we had more<br \/>\npeople like him), and his attempt to reform the Soviet system from within<br \/>\nthrough perestroika, were key catalysts in the rapid and peaceful end of an<br \/>\nunusually brutal regime. Not only was Communism&#8217;s fall in Russia peaceful, it<br \/>\nwas peaceful everywhere else but in Romania.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>And there the total killed was small for such an event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">Gorbachev&#8217;s rise to power came <i>before<br \/>\n<\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">before the Harmonic Convergence that might<br \/>\nhave unleashed magickal power. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">So <i>if <\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">the mass meditation had any impact here it was to<br \/>\nmake small shifts that in time would lead to big outcomes, building on currents<br \/>\nalready in motion.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>And that was<br \/>\nwith 20,000 people or more involved, although most were hardly skilled at this<br \/>\nsort of thing. But there was no focus on anything specific. &nbsp;At most it might have changed the psychic atmosphere around certain key people. &nbsp;But of course, that &#8220;at most&#8221; would have been quite a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><b>Thwarting Hitler<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">The effort by English witches to<br \/>\nprevent the German invasion of Great Britain may or may not have been<br \/>\neffective.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We will never<br \/>\nknow.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But Hitler&#8217;s sudden change<br \/>\nof mind seems strange and a great many people, many of whom were experienced in<br \/>\nsuch matters, concentrated on this <i>one <\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">man<br \/>\nand sent a single brief message: &#8220;You cannot cross the sea. You cannot<br \/>\ncome.&#8221;<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The energy was reportedly<br \/>\nenhanced by some present giving their lives. This suggests smaller groups<br \/>\nattempting bigger tasks had best be <\/span><i>very<\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\"> serious&#8230;<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>(For the<br \/>\nstory and the evidence see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wiccan-Roots-Gardner-Witchcraft-Revival\/dp\/1861631103\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1293155997&amp;sr=1-1\">Philip Heselton: <\/a><\/span><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wiccan-Roots-Gardner-Witchcraft-Revival\/dp\/1861631103\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1293155997&amp;sr=1-1\">Wiccan Roots<\/a><\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">As the possible English case<br \/>\nindicates, this does not mean magick cannot be employed for larger<br \/>\npurposes.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But it must be very wisely<br \/>\nemployed, and with discipline.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>Magick works for better or worse at the retail level.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\"><b>ANWAR?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">I am intrigued with the survival of<br \/>\nthe Alaska national Wildlife Refuge despite years of republican control and<br \/>\ntheir intent to drill there.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I<br \/>\nknow that many Pagans were involved in fighting against this effort, and would<br \/>\nbe amazed were magic not used.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But<br \/>\nit would have been used by many, and likely many would have agreed on a single<br \/>\nmessage in their workings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">This is why I do not personally get<br \/>\ninvolved in large-scale projects where we are asked to use magick. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>I think the energy will be dispersed,<br \/>\nsent to a vague target &#8220;world peace&#8221; for example, and be drowned by psychic<br \/>\nnoise.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>If there was a large scale<br \/>\norganized effort, I&#8217;d join in.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But<br \/>\nshort of that I&#8217;ll use it for helping to heal people close at hand and other<br \/>\nsuch things. I&#8217;ve used it for very very focused healings at a distance, and the<br \/>\nperson got better.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But was this a<br \/>\ncoincidence?<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Or not.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:150%\">And this points to another aspect<br \/>\nof magick: you will likely not know whether what you did worked or not, even if<br \/>\nit did.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It might, after all, be<br \/>\njust a coincidence.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>So my<br \/>\nrecommendation would be for those seeking to help others magickally would be to<br \/>\nwork &#8220;retail&#8221; on a single recipient, be very very focused, and completely let<br \/>\ngo of the working once it is over.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just before Yule one of my readers asked me to explain why I was not more interested in working magick on big issues, such as stopping global warming or bringing about more enlightenment in public policy.&nbsp; He said he planned to do such things up till the Solstice.
