{"id":715,"date":"2010-12-03T20:47:43","date_gmt":"2010-12-03T20:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2010\/12\/culture-shock.html"},"modified":"2010-12-03T20:47:43","modified_gmt":"2010-12-03T20:47:43","slug":"culture-shock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2010\/12\/culture-shock.html","title":{"rendered":"Culture Shock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It&#8217;s been hard to concentrate on this blog since I returned<br \/>\nfrom Utah.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;Really hard. &nbsp;<\/span>While the trip, like<br \/>\nany trip with a 9 year old, was not without its aggravations, being immersed in<br \/>\nsuch powerful, beautiful and peaceful land was a kind of spiritual balm.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I set aside thinking about politics and<br \/>\nkeeping up with the daily news, in favor of immersing myself in the energies of<br \/>\nsky and stone, river and rain, juniper and pine, rain and snow.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Washington, DC, seemed on another planet,<br \/>\nas energetically it is.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Even Pagan<br \/>\npersonalities, politics, and philosophy seemed far off compared to hiking<br \/>\nacross slick rock benches to gaze at soaring arches or looking down and up and<br \/>\nout from atop sheer canyon walls or watching clouds and snow flurries caress <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/castlerockcollaboration.org\/images\/image059.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/castlerockcollaboration.org\/image059.html&amp;usg=__flFc62Quw3Ev8XE4603ebyhXauY=&amp;h=493&amp;w=631&amp;sz=103&amp;hl=en&amp;start=0&amp;sig2=DgvSICNH9Ip-QTlR1iWqxg&amp;zoom=1&amp;tbnid=PLr_IQxQX36RtM:&amp;tbnh=129&amp;tbnw=166&amp;ei=PqD5TNLDAYiIvgOIhrGdCQ&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dla%2Bsalle%2Bmountains%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1521%26bih%3D839%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1&amp;itbs=1&amp;iact=rc&amp;dur=688&amp;oei=DJ_5TOSlNJTSsAPoivHtBg&amp;esq=13&amp;page=1&amp;ndsp=37&amp;ved=1t:429,r:8,s:0&amp;tx=112&amp;ty=37\">the La Salles<\/a>.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Letting the energy of the land sweep through me, healing and nourishing.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The high Southwest has always caused my<br \/>\nsoul to soar.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Returning was a kind of culture shock.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It was wonderful to see my friends and<br \/>\nnot so wonderful to be back in what passes for civilization.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I&#8217;d like to become a hermit, but I care about people too<br \/>\nmuch. I&#8217;d miss my friends and get lonely.&nbsp;If I could take my friends with me I&#8217;d never come back.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But for some reason they have lives of their own.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So here I am.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But I&#8217;m sure sympathetic to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abbeyweb.net\/\">Ed Abbey.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I have all these notes I made mostly immediately upon<br \/>\nreturning, notes on Las Vegas, America, and the canyon country, notes on<br \/>\nfriendly Mormons and how time changes on the trail and then energy of the<br \/>\nland.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Eventually more of them will<br \/>\nget into this blog. But oddly while I&#8217;ve been writing as much or more than<br \/>\never, it has not been about current events, Pagan or otherwise.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It&#8217;s been on bigger themes, ones that<br \/>\nprovide the context through which we look at daily events.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I needed to step back from things to find the time to get a<br \/>\nbreath, separate myself from the mix of misery, pain, and despair that so often<br \/>\nseems the only sane response to current events.<span>&nbsp;
