{"id":696,"date":"2010-10-20T18:08:45","date_gmt":"2010-10-20T18:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2010\/10\/the-neoconfederate-republicantea-party-1.html"},"modified":"2010-10-20T18:08:45","modified_gmt":"2010-10-20T18:08:45","slug":"the-neoconfederate-republicantea-party-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2010\/10\/the-neoconfederate-republicantea-party-1.html","title":{"rendered":"The NeoConfederate Republican\/Tea Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As I was researching the modern American rightwing and how<br \/>\nit had completely jettisoned the old conservative praise for limited<br \/>\ngovernment, I was struck at how it had been captured by the NeoConfederate<br \/>\nSouth, the one part of our country to have formally rejected the Declaration of<br \/>\nIndependence and ultimately the entire Western Enlightenment. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>As Alexander Stephens, Vice-president of<br \/>\nthe Confederacy,<span>&nbsp; <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/teachingamericanhistory.org\/library\/index.asp?documentprint=76\">said in 1860<\/a>, <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the<br \/>\nagitating questions relating to our peculiar institution &#8212; African slavery as it exists amongst us &#8212; the<br \/>\nproper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate<br \/>\ncause of the late rupture and present revolution.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Similar sentiments exist in all the documents I have read justifying the decision to secede at state conventions to secede.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>As the right became Southern in sentiment it abandoned those<br \/>\nconservative arguments rooted in the American constitutional tradition.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;This is why they no longer speak of limited government. &nbsp;They do not believe in limited government, only in small government so oligarchs can otherwise rule. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>But to win outside the South they had to dissemble, and capture the undeserved label &#8220;patriotic.&#8221; To this end the new<br \/>\nSouthern style &#8216;conservatives&#8217; deny that slavery and racism brought on the Civil War as avidly as the<br \/>\nsame people deny modern science and the constitution&#8217;s plain words about church<br \/>\nand state. &nbsp;This is as honest as draft evading Dick Cheney and duty shirking George Bush arguing they were more patriotic that Gore or Kerry, who volunteered and served in Vietnam. &nbsp;Same ethics, same tactics, same people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As the NeoConfederate party has become more confident of<br \/>\nwinning against a black President and the hated north, their self-restraint<br \/>\nseems to be breaking down their inner racism coming more and more to the front,<br \/>\nas the following links to explicitly racist actions by the Republican Party and<br \/>\nTea Party indicate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/crooksandliars.com\/david-neiwert\/naacp-exhaustively-details-how-tea-p\">NAACP exposure<\/a> of Tea Party racism.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Republican Party chair for Virginia&#8217;s largest city was<br \/>\nforced to step down after his email <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/10\/voter_registration_group_targeted_by_tx_tea_party_group_recieved_threats.php?ref=fpa\">comparing Black to dogs <\/a>was made public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Right wing proposed immigration law for Florida<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/10\/20\/florida-immigration-law\/\"> exempts<br \/>\nCanadians and western European<\/a>s from proving they are here legally.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Texas voting registration organization aiming at minorities gets<a href=\"http:\/\/tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/10\/voter_registration_group_targeted_by_tx_tea_party_group_recieved_threats.php?ref=fpa\">&nbsp;attacks and racist slurs&nbsp;<\/a>from Tea Party people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That&#8217;s just what I found for today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Much historical information on the NeoConfederate influence in America can be found in Kevin Phillips <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/American-Theocracy-Politics-Religion-Borrowed\/dp\/0143038281\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1287613895&amp;sr=1-1\">American Theocracy<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I was researching the modern American rightwing and how it had completely jettisoned the old conservative praise for limited government, I was struck at how it had been captured by the NeoConfederate South, the one part of our country to have formally rejected the Declaration of Independence and ultimately the entire Western Enlightenment. &nbsp;As&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[111],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-696","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
