{"id":642,"date":"2010-07-25T12:34:09","date_gmt":"2010-07-25T12:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2010\/07\/vaccines-war-and-remembrance.html"},"modified":"2010-07-25T12:34:09","modified_gmt":"2010-07-25T12:34:09","slug":"vaccines-war-and-remembrance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2010\/07\/vaccines-war-and-remembrance.html","title":{"rendered":"Vaccines, War and Remembrance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">Daily Kos has a<br \/>\nfascinating story on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2010\/7\/24\/887105\/-Pandemics,-Pertussis-and-Vaccine\">rapid increase in whooping cough cases<\/a> in California<br \/>\nin 2004, a spike apparently correlated county by county with the number of<br \/>\nchildren whose parents chose not to have them vaccinated. &nbsp;This increase<span>&nbsp; <\/span>in whooping cough<br \/>\ncases has been accompanied by a increasing infant deaths.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The falsehood that vaccines are correlated with autism has<br \/>\ntaken lives.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>But I have another point to make, sparked by this article.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">Childhood disease<br \/>\nused to kill an enormous number of infants and children.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>For example, all the male children of<br \/>\nour Founders died except for John Quincy Adams.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But today childhood death by disease is rare, almost<br \/>\nentirely due to increases in sanitation and vaccines.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">As a child I<br \/>\nremember standing in line to get the first polio vaccine.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>When I was a child polio was a source<br \/>\nof constant fear for parents everywhere. Ironically, polio, which hit in its<br \/>\nfirst American epidemic in 1916, was a scourge of the modern world.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The sanitation that ended deadly<br \/>\ndiseases such as typhoid also prevented infants from contracting a usually<br \/>\nunnoticeable disease that gets dramatically worse with the age of the person<br \/>\ncontracting it.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">Those who were<br \/>\nsymptom free were still contagious, and 1% of those contracting it were<br \/>\nparalyzed.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Sometimes fatally.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It had become a childhood scourge<br \/>\noften afflicting 13,000 to 20,000 Americans annually, sometimes over 40,000,<br \/>\nand with an alarming tendency to increase in numbers of victims over time.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span>In one of the most remarkable and little<br \/>\nremembered acts of generosity by an American, Dr. Jonas Salk, who discovered<br \/>\nthe vaccine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salk.edu\/about\/jonas_salk.html\">gave it away<\/a> as a gift to humanity. <span style=\"font-family:Times\">&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/hisa\/resources\/Student%20Projects\/McCreedy\/students.umw.edu\/_lmccr9sd\/poliovaccine\/significance.html\"><font><font>As he put it<\/font><\/font><\/a><font><font> when asked about a patent, &#8220;Well, the people, I would say.&nbsp; There is<br \/>\nno patent.&nbsp; Could you patent the sun?&#8221;<\/font><\/font><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><font><font>&nbsp;<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">Polio ceased to be a childhood threat &#8211; or a threat at all. &nbsp;Today most children worldwide are vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">But today people are also turning down vaccines because of bogus and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/HEALTH\/02\/02\/lancet.retraction.autism\/index.html\">retracted claims<\/a> &nbsp;about their relation to autism.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>(For a <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/insolence\/2010\/07\/too_much_vaccineautism_monkey_business_f.php\">far more rigorous<br \/>\nanalysis<\/a> of this issue, see Orac in Science Blogs.) &nbsp;There is no memory of life before vaccines and great fear of the rise in<br \/>\nautism.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It is far easier to blame<br \/>\na vaccine than to wonder whether there may be something fundamentally amiss<br \/>\nwith modern society.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Taking the<br \/>\neasy way out, children die.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">Similarly, after<br \/>\nthe Vietnam War many Americans, myself included, thought we had learned a<br \/>\nlesson.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Avoid wars of choice,<br \/>\navoid imposing governments on people, and distrust government propaganda<br \/>\nbecause it is rarely truthful, and never truthful because of respect for truth.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Starting with Bush II, those lessons<br \/>\nwere forgotten instantaneously in a national case of collective Alzheimers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">The 60s were<br \/>\nreinterpreted, as World War One was for Germans afterwards, during the Weimar<br \/>\nRepublic, as teaching us that we must always support government, and by so<br \/>\ndoing, &#8220;our troops.&#8221;<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Then victory<br \/>\nis inevitable.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Defeat occurred for<br \/>\nGermany because she was &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stab-in-the-back_legend\">stabbed in the back<\/a>&#8221; by leftist and Jews at home. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>Too many Americans applied the<a href=\"http:\/\/harpers.org\/archive\/2006\/06\/0081080\"> same<br \/>\nself-congratulatory reasoning<\/a> to Vietnam. The problem was other people.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">Taking the easy<br \/>\nway out, people die.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">Societies do<br \/>\nlearn lessons, good and bad alike, but it seems they have to enter its<br \/>\nfolklore.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Unfortunately for<br \/>\nreasons I do not understand the falsehoods seem to get a better hold in many<br \/>\ncultures than do the truths.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Perhaps <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Political-Mind-Understand-21st-Century-18th-Century\/dp\/0670019275\">George Lakoff is righ<\/a>t, &nbsp;and societies with conservative hierarchical cultures choose to interpret<br \/>\neverything in those terms, which makes them blind to the downside of their<br \/>\nguiding ethos.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">Or perhaps, as I<br \/>\nheard Ram Dass say years ago, when he answered a question as to whether the<br \/>\nworld was getting better. <span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt;line-height:150%\">&#8220;The world is a<br \/>\nlot like the Fourth Grade.<span>&nbsp;
