{"id":622,"date":"2010-06-25T11:33:35","date_gmt":"2010-06-25T11:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2010\/06\/hitler-obama-and-thomas-sowells-intellectual-collapse.html"},"modified":"2010-06-25T11:33:35","modified_gmt":"2010-06-25T11:33:35","slug":"hitler-obama-and-thomas-sowells-intellectual-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2010\/06\/hitler-obama-and-thomas-sowells-intellectual-collapse.html","title":{"rendered":"Hitler, Obama, and Thomas Sowell&#8217;s Intellectual Collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Economist Thomas Sowell received a lot of attention for a<br \/>\npiece he just wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/article.nationalreview.com\/371247\/idols-of-crowds\/thomas-sowell\">comparing Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler<\/a>. <span style=\"font-family:Times\">&nbsp;As Sowell explained, &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Times\">To find anything comparable<br \/>\nto crowds&#8217; euphoric reactions to Obama, you would have to go back to old<br \/>\nnewsreels of German crowds in the 1930s, with their adulation of their fuehrer,<br \/>\nAdolf Hitler.&#8221; Elsewhere&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';font-size: 16px\">Sowell also argues &nbsp;that<br \/>\nObama&#8217;s getting new voters to the polls and his requiring BP to post $20<br \/>\nbillion in escrow are <a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/ThomasSowell\/2010\/06\/22\/degeneration_of_democracy\">additional steps along Hitler&#8217;s path to power<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">I found some newsreel<br \/>\nexamples of Hitler and crowds.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishpathe.com\/record.php?id=49941\">Sure looks like Democrats to me<\/a>.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>&nbsp;(For the benefit of my most conservative readers &#8211; this is sarcasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\">Sowell comes across in conservative minds as a real defender of American democracy, <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/06\/25\/palin-sowell-hitler\/\">as Sarah Palin, for one, gushes<\/a>. This is a sad commentary on both Sowell and the American &#8216;conservative&#8217; mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.25in\">Long ago, Thomas Sowell wrote a very fine book,&nbsp;<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ethnic-America-History-Thomas-Sowell\/dp\/0465020755\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1277479598&amp;sr=1-1\">Ethnic America<\/a><\/i><span style=\"font-style: normal\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;I learned a lot from it, like the important and fascinating insight that Black Americans fall into three large cultural groups: those whose ancestors were slaves in the north, and were freed long before the Civil War, the majority of Black Americans who descended from Southern slaves, and a third group who emigrated from the West Indies.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Those descended from immigrants are as educated and prosperous as white Americans, and include people such as Harry Belafonte and Colin Powell.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sowell uses their example to argue cultural traits matter more than racism or its lack in attaining economic success.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>It&#8217;s a fascinating read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.25in\">Somewhat later Sowell wrote and OK book,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Knowledge-Decisions-Thomas-Sowell\/dp\/0465037380\/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1277479736&amp;sr=1-11\"><i>Knowledge and Decisions<\/i><\/a>&nbsp;on F. A. Hayek&#8217;s ideas and similar insights from other economists.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>I&#8217;m not sure I learned anything new, but it was certainly easier to follow than Hayek&#8217;s own rather Germanic work and likely introduced many people to his ideas, albeit with a more right-ward slant than I think was justified.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.25in\">But by then Sowell had fallen in with right wing think tanks, and intellectually it seems to me his scholarly insight tended to be downhill from there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.25in\">In his newspaper column Sowell later repeated the false right (and left) wing canard that our founders disliked &#8220;democracy,&#8221; and preferred &#8220;republics,&#8221; quoting James Madison&#8217;s statement to that effect in <i>The Federalist<\/i> number 10. That Sowell was abandoning scholarship for hackdom had become clear, for Madison defined a republic as a system of government where the people elected representatives.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Today we call Madison&#8217;s &#8220;republic&#8221; &#8216;representative democracy&#8217; &#8211; a term that did not then exist. (I can no longer find the column &#8211; Sowell wr<span style=\"font-family: Times\">ote it before the net amounted to much of anything.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.25in\"><span style=\"font-family: Times\">But there was worse to come.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>For example, Sowell, not Obama, has <a href=\"http:\/\/article.nationalreview.com\/313632\/dont-get-weak\/thomas-sowell\">endorsed military coups<\/a> to repudiate the voters when he disagrees with their choice:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.25in\"><font face=\"Times\"><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--StartFragment-->\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">When I see the worsening<br \/>\ndegeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our<br \/>\nintelligentsia, I can&#8217;t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only<br \/>\nthing that can save this country is a military coup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.25in\">It is more than a little ironic (and given the American right&#8217;s love of violent rhetoric, also worrisome) that<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Hitler&#8217;s first attempt to take power was an attempted coup in Bavaria, the &#8220;Beer Hall Putsch&#8221; taken for what he and his supporters argued were deeply patriotic reasons against the liberal Weimar Republic. Hitler seems in better keeping with Sowell&#8217;s recent line of argument than Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.25in\">Thomas Sowell is a sad example of the collapse of conservative scholarship and moral and&nbsp;<span>&nbsp;<\/span>intellectual integrity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Economist Thomas Sowell received a lot of attention for a piece he just wrote comparing Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler. &nbsp;As Sowell explained, &#8220;To find anything comparable to crowds&#8217;
