Victims and taxpayers pay, CEOs and<br \/>\nshareholders get the swag.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This is<br \/>\nexactly like the nuclear industry&#8217;s demand that there be a cap on damages for<br \/>\nwhich they can be held accountable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">In<br \/>\nfree market terms that these liars and hypocrites like to hide behind, we <i>cannot<br \/>\nafford<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times\"> to obtain energy in this<br \/>\nway.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>If we could companies could<br \/>\nget insurance to cover the damages.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>They would not need special exemption.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>No more clear signal could be sent that we need to wean<br \/>\nourselves from such dependence.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>It&#8217;s so simple only a right winger would have trouble understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\"><b>2.<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">More, as bad or worse, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/linda-keenan\/emshadow-eliteem-think-bp_b_574606.html\">unnervingly likely<\/a>. <span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>The Bush administration and Republican<br \/>\nParty did enormous damage to this country dismantling legally required agencies<br \/>\nand regulations.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The Obama<br \/>\nadministration has been remiss in undoing the damage.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The law has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/14\/us\/14agency.html?hp\">systematically ignored<\/a> as has the testimony<br \/>\nof scientists all<span>&nbsp;<\/span>to serve the desires of big oil. Meanwhile<br \/>\nindustry whores in both parties do all they can do prevent the oil industry<br \/>\nfrom being held accountable for the damage they do to this country. Republican<br \/>\nLisa Murkowski <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/05\/13\/lisa-murkowski-blocks-bil_n_575918.html\">blocked attempts <\/a>to raise the liability cap from its tiny $75<br \/>\nmillion to $10 billion.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>&nbsp;But Democrat Marie Landrieu <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politicsdaily.com\/2010\/05\/10\/gulf-coast-senators-lincoln-nelson-clash-over-oil-spill\/\">is no better<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">This<br \/>\nlawlessness is possible because of the triumph of two falsehoods (Full<br \/>\ndisclosure: I once accepted both as true and will happily take on anyone who<br \/>\nstill does).<span>&nbsp; <\/span>First, that business<br \/>\nself interest will lead to safe practices.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Second, that the government is inherently less competent<br \/>\nthan private industry.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Accepting<br \/>\nboth theses has gradually led to the inane babble that passes for policy debate<br \/>\non the right and all to often elsewhere.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>They are false.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\"><b>3.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">Big<br \/>\nbusinesses are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/joanne-doroshow\/from-three-mile-island-to_b_570963.html\">intrinsically dishonest<\/a>. &nbsp;We are discovering that the &#8216;safety devices&#8221; promoted by the oil companies are<br \/>\nas honest and competent as the leadership by the financial industry.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>At a time when sending and storing data<br \/>\nis at its quickest and easiest, the last 7 hours of crucial data on the<br \/>\nDeepwater Horizon rig are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/gulf-oil-spill\/index.ssf\/2010\/05\/seven_hours_of_data_missing_fr.html\">somehow &#8220;missing.&#8221;<\/a> &nbsp;Testimony suggests that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/huff-wires\/20100512\/us-gulf-oil-spill-failed-tests\/\">BP is lying<\/a>. &nbsp;We are learning that there was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/05\/14\/mike-mason-oil-industry-w_n_575999.html\">widespread cheating<\/a> on safety tests. We are learning that crime pays for BP because fines are so small relative to<br \/>\nthe money made by breaking the law that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/daphne-wysham\/crime-pays-for-bp_b_571948.html\">breaking the law is their preferred<br \/>\napproach<\/a>.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>&nbsp;We are learning that &#8220;Beyond Petroleum&#8221; BP spent as much <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americablog.com\/2010\/05\/how-beyond-petroleum-was-bp.html\">on advertising in two<br \/>\nyears as it did on alternative energy in six<\/a>, all the while emphasizing its<br \/>\ncommitment to such goals in public. &nbsp;If a corporate CEO or spokesperson is speaking, the odds are good we can assume<br \/>\nlies are being emitted.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It&#8217;s not a<br \/>\ncertainty, but it&#8217;s a probability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\"><b>4.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">Big<br \/>\nbusinesses are intrinsically sociopathic.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Who but a moral monster would give<a href=\"http:\/\/tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/05\/dem_rep_grills_transocean_ceo_on_im_not_hurt_form.php\">&nbsp;just rescued oil workers papers to sign<br \/>\n<\/a>claiming they saw nothing amiss and were not injured after being rescued from<br \/>\nthe Gulf?<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Just like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/05\/04\/massey-ceo-blankenship-sa_n_562591.html\">moral<br \/>\nmonster Don Blankenship<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;in West Virginia, we now find that they also ignored the most basic<br \/>\nrequirements for their supposedly anti-blowout devices.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>They rejected technologies in use<br \/>\nelsewhere that would likely have prevented the disaster, and argued <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704423504575212031417936798.html\">against<br \/>\nregulations <\/a>requiring greater safety. &nbsp;BP apparently had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/05\/06\/feds-let-bp-avoid-filing-_n_566224.html\">no back up plans<\/a> if something went wrong. &nbsp;And they attempt to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/bill-moyers\/chevrons-crude-attempt-to_b_576595.html\">control information<\/a> to prevent our knowing just how<br \/>\ndisastrous their mess is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><font face=\"Times, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><b>A Solution<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:9.0pt\"><font face=\"Times, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\">There is a remarkably easy way to begin shifting to a sane and sustainable way of having energy without tying ourselves to these corporate monsters who are destroying our planet. &nbsp;I have mentioned it before and I will again. &nbsp;Impose a carbon tax on all processes that release CO2, a tax proportional to the CO2 emitted. &nbsp;Begin relatively small, so as to avoid severe disruptions, and have it increase at a predictable and significant rate. &nbsp;REDUCE taxes on Social Security, which will reduce the burden businesses bear for wages and keeping the impact revenue neutral. &nbsp;Let people and their creativity discover how best to avoid taxes by reducing CO2 emissions.
