{"id":582,"date":"2010-05-10T11:14:16","date_gmt":"2010-05-10T11:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2010\/05\/nature-is-good-for-you.html"},"modified":"2010-05-10T11:14:16","modified_gmt":"2010-05-10T11:14:16","slug":"nature-is-good-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2010\/05\/nature-is-good-for-you.html","title":{"rendered":"Nature is Good for You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\">It turns out that immersing ourselves<br \/>\nin Nature is good for us in ways that science can actually measure.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A paper<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/es903183r\"> published last week<\/a>, &#8220;A Dose of<br \/>\nNature&#8221; Jules Pretty and Jo Barton found that people&#8217;s <span style=\"font-family:Times\">mood<br \/>\nand self-esteem benefit from what it calls &#8220;green exercise.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.essex.ac.uk\/news\/event.aspx?e_id=1588\">Prof. Pretty said<\/a> of his study <span style=\"color:#313846\">&#8220;For the first time in the scientific<br \/>\nliterature, we have been able to show dose-response relationships for the<br \/>\npositive effects of nature on human mental health.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;color:#313846\">Their findings applied to all ages and both genders, though there<br \/>\nwere interesting differences among them.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>The biggest benefits applied to the mentally ill, suggesting that my<br \/>\nsuspicion modern society may drive us crazy is well founded.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">In<br \/>\na report on the paper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/opinion\/commentators\/peter-stanford-how-to-change-your-life-in-five-minutes-a-day-go-outside-1969209.html\">Peter Stanford writes<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:22.5pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;color:#262626\">The study shows, for example, that being in a green environment<br \/>\nis better than being in an urban one in terms of a measurable positive effect<br \/>\non blood pressure, hormones and stress levels. Intriguingly, it also concludes<br \/>\nthat the biggest beneficial boost from exposure to nature is gained within the<br \/>\ninitial five minutes of each encounter with the great outdoors. While it<br \/>\ncontinues to reap a harvest thereafter, the crop of positives diminishes.<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times;color:#313846\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.25in\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\">Gary<\/span><br \/>\nSnyder has written, truly I think, that the spirit of place is the total of all<br \/>\nthe energy fields present in a place.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Those of rocks and water, soil and air, plants, animals, fungi, people &#8211;<br \/>\nthe whole nine yards.<span>&nbsp;
