\nconcern to their entire community. <\/span>Idealy they do so after hearing reasoned discussion on the
\nissues, or at least hearing enough so their vote will usually be the same as it
\nwould be if they had become very well informed. No democracy achieves this
\nperfectly, and the US does a worse job than many others, but to the
\ndegree this country is worth supporting, this is its reason for existence. <\/span>The Declaration of Independence and the
\nPreamble to our Constitution are very explicit on this issue.<\/p>\n
\nsociopath, that is, interested only in what serves its interests, which is
\nmaking money for shareholders. <\/span>As
\nan institution it is <\/span>incapable <\/i>of
\nacting with concern for any value but that. <\/span>Milton Friedman made a famous argument that not only is this
\ntrue, it should be true<\/a> and acting otherwise is dishonest on the part of the
\nCEO. <\/span>Being more decent than
\nFriedman, corporate CEOs often fudge a little bit his advice, but only a little bit. Doing anything that reduces
\nprofit opens them up to being ousted in a unfriendly takeover by a group whose
\nmoral scruples are lower. The classic example is <\/span>what happened to California’s Pacific Lumber Company<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nlet alone the moral issues facing management. <\/span>They own mutual funds whose entire reason for
\nexistence is to invest in the best performing shares. <\/span>In corporations there is a race to the moral bottom, already
\nspectacularly achieved in the banking industry. But that is because they are even more obviously money driven than other corporations.<\/p>\n
\ngiven a privileged position in American politics, even more than they already enjoyed. <\/span>This is like giving clinical
\nsociopaths several thousand more votes than morally balanced Americans. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nthe most subversively un-American doctrine this country has ever had to face since the

\ndestroy our increasingly fragile democracy. <\/span>I hope justice will eventually prevail not only on this
\nissue, but also on their standing in history.<\/p>\n
