{"id":433,"date":"2009-12-11T19:06:04","date_gmt":"2009-12-11T19:06:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2009\/12\/signs-and-war.html"},"modified":"2009-12-11T19:06:04","modified_gmt":"2009-12-11T19:06:04","slug":"signs-and-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2009\/12\/signs-and-war.html","title":{"rendered":"Signs and War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Walking in the rain down to the autoteller to get some cash, I saw<br \/>\nSebastopol&#8217;s regular demonstrators, one group against the latest war, the other<br \/>\nsupporting our troops, standing on the corner where the cash machine<br \/>\nstood.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Not in the mood for<br \/>\npolitics, when I noticed the bank was nearly empty I walked inside before I got<br \/>\nto them, preferring to cash my check there.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But as I walked back out to the corner, I looked at the<br \/>\nsigns behind me.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The ones I<br \/>\nusually agreed with said &#8220;War is another form of terrorism&#8221; which seems pretty<br \/>\naccurate given the number of wedding parties and groups of civilians our drones<br \/>\nhave shot up, while the other simply said &#8220;Support Our Troops.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I mentioned I agreed with all the signs, which precipitated<br \/>\na friendly conversation with the &#8220;Support Our Troops&#8221; sign carrier.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Turns out her son is serving over<br \/>\nthere.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>She was an open warm woman<br \/>\nwho felt if we didn&#8217;t support them they should come home.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I told her I strongly supported their<br \/>\nwell being, had friends with children over there, and wanted them to come home.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>All true.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I gradually got them all talking, and with a cheer for all<br \/>\nthe signs, continued on my way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As I left I thought about how the militaristic politicians<br \/>\nthat infest this country, who almost to a man never served their country in<br \/>\nuniform, have done such a thorough job of turning Americans against one another<br \/>\neven when at root they do not always disagree that profoundly.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Demonize the other side and it all<br \/>\nfalls apart.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Just like with rank<br \/>\nand file conservative Christians and their ruthless leaders.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It&#8217;s very sad, a dreary thought on a wet and dreary day.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Walking in the rain down to the autoteller to get some cash, I saw Sebastopol&#8217;s regular demonstrators, one group against the latest war, the other supporting our troops, standing on the corner where the cash machine stood.&nbsp;
