Wicca 101 class went very well the day after I returned from
\nthe Southwest – despite my having forgotten to make copies of  <\/span>Tables of Correspondence, which was to
\nbe a big part of the intended lesson. 
\n<\/span>Since we had been working with energy, I made a quick change, and we
\nworked on shielding instead – something I had planned for the next class.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n


\nIt was a wonderful success.  <\/span>Students divided into pairs, faced each other, and one would
\nclose their eyes and erect an energy shield between them and their
\npartner.  <\/span>The other would then try
\nto find it.  <\/span>After they thought
\nthey did, the one with eyes closed would open them and confirm or disconfirm
\ntheir quest.  <\/span>Then they would
\nchange places.<\/p>\n

To my delight everyone seemed to get it on their first try.  <\/span>So beginning in the next class we will
\nstart casting circles and working in ritual space.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s a great exercise, and gives people confidence they are
\nactually ‘doing something’ when they raise a shield.<\/span><\/p>\n

Years ago a friend was taking the class, a friend who was a friendly
\nskeptic about these matters.  <\/span>When
\nwe broke up into dyads I ended up with her because there was an odd number of
\nstudents.  <\/span>She closed her eyes and
\nerected her shield.  <\/span>I came closer
\nand closer, feeling nothing. 
\n<\/span>Finally, about 4 or 5 incles from her face, I found what seemed to be
\nher shield.<\/p>\n

“Here?”  <\/span>I
\nasked.<\/p>\n

“No!” she said triumphantly, “Here.”  <\/span>She gestured about half and inch from
\nher nose.<\/p>\n

I was embarrassed.  After all, I was the teacher.  <\/span>Fortunately for my ego and her understanding, I asked “What did you make
\nit from?”<\/p>\n

“Bricks.” She said.<\/p>\n

“And how wide is a brick?”<\/p>\n

Her skepticism declined markedly.<\/p>\n
