{"id":319,"date":"2009-07-27T12:45:55","date_gmt":"2009-07-27T12:45:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2009\/07\/primary-elections-and-american-democracy.html"},"modified":"2009-07-27T12:45:55","modified_gmt":"2009-07-27T12:45:55","slug":"primary-elections-and-american-democracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2009\/07\/primary-elections-and-american-democracy.html","title":{"rendered":"Primary Elections and American Democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After huffing and puffing that he would still frequently vote against the Democrats, new &#8220;Democrat&#8221; Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania, has fallen into line.&nbsp; Understanding why gives a whiff of hope for the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The only place a semblance of democracy remains in Congress<br \/>\nany more is in Democratic primaries.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Both parties often do the bidding of their corporate funders, and when<br \/>\nvoting on other issues, the Republicans have chosen theocracy and bigotry.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Republican primaries have proven to be<br \/>\ndominated by voters who think the world is 6000 years old and they will soon be<br \/>\nraptured away anyway, so intelligent voting is not an issue for them, but<br \/>\nDemocratic primaries still attract voters who often understand reason and facts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But, and here&#8217;s the problem, once elected, most Senators and<br \/>\nRepresentatives have guaranteed seats so far as their own party is<br \/>\nconcerned.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>So if all a corrupt<br \/>\nDemocrat like Max Baucus needs to worry about is the Republicans, he can and<br \/>\ndoes safely sell his vote to the highest corporate contributors, and leave his<br \/>\nvoters out in the cold.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>They won&#8217;t<br \/>\nhave a choice at election time except for someone even worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->&nbsp;<!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">What&#8217;s an American who cares to do?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->&nbsp;<!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Shift our attention to Democratic primaries, and fund<br \/>\nchallengers to seats held by Democrats who are more problem than solution.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->&nbsp;<!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Arlen Spector switched to the Democratic Party because he<br \/>\nwas all but guaranteed to lose a Republican primary challenge from a challenger<br \/>\neven further to the right because their primary voters would be dominated by<br \/>\nlunatics, still bragged he would often vote against the Democrats.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Spector has recently achieved a 97%<br \/>\nvote with the Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fivethirtyeight.com\/2009\/07\/since-primary-challenge-specter-voting.html\">now that he has a primary challenger<\/a>.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->&nbsp;<!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With the ethically corrupt and opportunistic, all that<br \/>\ncounts is the possibility of their losing their cushy positions.
