{"id":271,"date":"2009-06-01T12:01:49","date_gmt":"2009-06-01T12:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2009\/06\/passing-of-the-guard.html"},"modified":"2009-06-01T12:01:49","modified_gmt":"2009-06-01T12:01:49","slug":"passing-of-the-guard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2009\/06\/passing-of-the-guard.html","title":{"rendered":"Passing of the Guard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Berry\">Thomas Berry<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/ncronline.org\/blogs\/ncr-today\/death-thomas-berry\">died today<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; He had been a central figure in helping Western Christians, those willing to look and learn anyway, re-establishing connectedness with the sacred immanence we Pagans find in nature. <\/p>\n<p>Other giants in ecological and spiritual thought have also died recently: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arne_N%C3%A6ss\">Arne Naess<\/a>, who developed the term &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deepecology.org\/index.htm\">deep ecology&#8217;<\/a>&nbsp; and did so much to help anyone who took the time to see how we all connect with the wild world also died earlier this year.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Val_Plumwood\">Val Plumwood<\/a>,&nbsp; one of the greats in ecofeminism, who came to a similar understanding from a different direction passed on in 2008.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The greatest thinkers help us experience our world and lives in new and more profound ways.&nbsp; By that standard they were great&nbsp;&nbsp; men and women.<\/p>\n<p>I am witnessing a passing of the guard among those who helped me and so many others better understand our love of the earth.&nbsp; For those who took the time to understand, they helped shatter this society&#8217;s dark spell of death on the living world.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>May their work live as long as the rivers shall run and the sun shall shine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas Berry has died today.&nbsp;&nbsp; He had been a central figure in helping Western Christians, those willing to look and learn anyway, re-establishing connectedness with the sacred immanence we Pagans find in nature.
