{"id":258,"date":"2009-05-21T12:03:25","date_gmt":"2009-05-21T12:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/apagansblog\/2009\/05\/witch-hunts-in-gambia.html"},"modified":"2009-05-21T12:03:25","modified_gmt":"2009-05-21T12:03:25","slug":"witch-hunts-in-gambia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/apagansblog\/2009\/05\/witch-hunts-in-gambia.html","title":{"rendered":"Witch Hunts in Gambia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gambia&#8217;s sordid dictatorship&nbsp; is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/05\/21\/world\/africa\/21gambia.html?_r=1&amp;ref=todayspaper\">conducting &#8220;witch hunts<\/a>&#8221; and spreading fear throughout its territory.&nbsp; This time it&#8217;s not being done in the name of religion, and it isn&#8217;t targeting children, but it&#8217;s still dreadful and murderous. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/for-media\/press-releases\/gambia-hundreds-accused-%E2%80%9Cwitchcraft%E2%80%9D-and-poisoned-government-campaign-20\">bizarre and terrifying campaign<\/a>, apparently sparked by the death of the dictator&#8217;s aunt.&nbsp; He believed witchcraft was responsible.&nbsp; People are selected by witch finders, apparently at random, forced to drink poisonous liquids, beaten, and after some days, if they survive, return home.<\/p>\n<p>Others are forced to sacrifice animals to &#8216;fight witchcraft.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>This is the dark side of what can happen in a society where belief in magick is widespread, especially when ruthless politicians are in control. Anything unpleasant can be attributed to someone&#8217;s malicious influence.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>I wonder whether along with its many other problems, Africa might be falling into a witch hunting craze such as convulsed Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gambia&#8217;s sordid dictatorship&nbsp;
