It dates back<br \/>\nto 1865. On June 19th Major General<br \/>\nGordon Granger, leader of the Union&nbsp; forces landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and<br \/>\nthat all slaves were now free.<\/p>\n<p>His first order of business what to share order 3 with the people of Texas:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font>&#8220;The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a<br \/>\nProclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This<br \/>\ninvolves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former<br \/>\nmasters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes<br \/>\nthat between employer and free laborer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<font>The celebration of June 19th was coined &#8220;Juneteenth&#8221; as its popularity grew with more<br \/>\nparticipation from descendants. <\/p>\n<p>The Juneteenth celebration was a time for praying and for gathering remaining family members.<br \/>\nJuneteenth continued to be highly revered in Texas for decades, with many<br \/>\nformer slaves and descendants making a pilgrimage back to Galveston on<br \/>\nthis date.<\/font><\/p>\n<p>As we all know it took a lot longer for equality to become anything like a reality.
