Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. It dates back
\nto 1865. On June 19th Major General
\nGordon Granger, leader of the Union  forces landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and
\nthat all slaves were now free.<\/p>\n

His first order of business what to share order 3 with the people of Texas:<\/p>\n

“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a
\nProclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This
\ninvolves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former
\nmasters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes
\nthat between employer and free laborer.”<\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n


\nThe celebration of June 19th was coined “Juneteenth” as its popularity grew with more
\nparticipation from descendants. <\/p>\n

The Juneteenth celebration was a time for praying and for gathering remaining family members.
\nJuneteenth continued to be highly revered in Texas for decades, with many
\nformer slaves and descendants making a pilgrimage back to Galveston on
\nthis date.<\/font><\/p>\n

As we all know it took a lot longer for equality to become anything like a reality. Today is a great day to celebrate your own freedom and to give thanks for all the gifts you have in your life. <\/p>\n
