This is the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day! To me that is a big WOW. Earth Day<\/a> was created to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisconsin) as an environmental teach-in in 1970. The United Nations celebrates Earth Day on the Spring Equinox.<\/p>\n

My uncle gave me a copy of Rachael Carson’s<\/a> book A Silent Spring<\/a> when I was a young girl. It impacted me deeply and I have always been an organic gardener, recycled and try to read lightly on Mother Earth.<\/p>\n


\nToday I thought I would share a few prayers and thoughts from a variety of sources about nature, the earth and life upon this magnificent planet.<\/p>\n

Cherokee Prayer Blessing<\/p>\n

May the Warm Winds of Heaven
Blow softly upon your house.
May the Great Spirit
Bless all who enter there.
May your Mocassins
Make happy tracks
in many snows,
and may the Rainbow
always touch your shoulder<\/i><\/p>\n

Earth, Teach Me ~ An Ute Prayer

Earth teach me quiet ~ as the grasses are still with new light.
Earth teach me suffering ~ as old stones suffer with memory.
Earth teach me humility ~ as blossoms are humble with beginning.
Earth teach me caring ~ as mothers nurture their young.
Earth teach me courage ~ as the tree that stands alone.
Earth teach me limitation ~ as the ant that crawls on the ground.
Earth teach me freedom ~ as the eagle that soars in the sky.
Earth teach me acceptance ~ as the leaves that die each fall.
Earth teach me renewal ~ as the seed that rises in the spring.
Earth teach me to forget myself ~ as melted snow forgets its life.
Earth teach me to remember kindness ~ as dry fields weep with rain.<\/i><\/p>\n

From the Tao:

“Heaven cannot but be high. Earth cannot but be broad. The sun and moon cannot but revolve. All creation cannot but flourish. To do so is their TAO.”<\/i><\/p>\n

Just as treasures are
\nuncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom
\nappears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze
\nof human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.<\/i><\/p>\n
