When I woke up on September 11th<\/sup> the towers had already fallen. I grew up in NYC and played in the basement of the Empire State Building as a young girl. I was shocked by the devastation. The images were compelling. I found myself glued to the television, crying and overwhelmed with all kinds of emotions.<\/p>\n

The images were upsetting but I was even more upset by the anger and violence directed at the terrorists. I knew all that anger would only create more anger and violence, more innocent people would be killed and the cycle would continue. I wrote a letter to the editor talking about the power of love and forgiveness suggesting we offer prayers for everyone involved, including the terrorists. The paper left out everything except my suggestion to pray for the terrorists.<\/p>\n

Six o\u2019clock the next morning my phone started ringing. The majority of the calls were angry. I did get a few supportive calls, one from a local peace organization. The most memorable call was a very angry call from a young man threatening to kill me. I debated about calling the police and reporting him but decided to practice what I teach, sending him love and praying for him instead. A week later I received another phone call from the same man asking me for forgiveness. We talked for a long time. He was ashamed of his verbal abuse and I told him to be proud of himself for calling to apologize. I was so grateful I had chosen prayer instead of judgment and fear.<\/p>\n

Had I called the police I am sure there would have been a very different outcome. Prayer, forgiveness and love are the answer no matter what the problem. I have continued to pray for everyone affected by the events of that day and for a world so filled with love there is no need for violence of any kind.<\/p>\n
