Since this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I thought I would post again about my favorite saint, St. Agatha. She taught me that saints’ lives were about being so profoundly connected to the divine that they were able to rise above any physical challenges. Perhaps spend some time meditating with her and let her explain that to you herself!

St. Agatha’s story is horrendous, and yet she died in peace. Her connection to her divinity was so deep she had only love and compassion for those who sought to do her harm.

From The Encyclopedia of Angels, Spirit Guides and Ascended Masters:

Agatha

(died c.a. 250)

She was a virgin and martyr. She was born of a wealthy family and was beautiful. She refused to marry a Roman consul because she had dedicated her life to being a virgin of Christ. It was around 250 which was a period of severe persecution for Christians. She was sent to a brothel but remained a virgin. Then she was accused of being a Christian and turned over to the magistrate. She was beaten and tortured but was sustained by her love of God. The magistrate was so enraged by her cheerful continence that he had her breasted crushed and cut off. St. Peter came to her in a vision that night and healed her wounds. Totally unimpressed by the miracle the magistrate had her rolled over hot coals and broken clay pots. She prayed for release from her pain and the earth began to tremble with a violent earthquake. She died with a look of peace on her face.

Her courage and pious love of God fostered a cult following. Prayers to her were reported to cure people of a variety of ills and to stop Mount Etna from erupting. She was credited with stopping the Turks from invading Malta. Medieval paintings of her showed her carrying a tray with her breast which many people thought were really loaves of bread creating the tradition of blessing bread on feast day. Agatha’s faith allowed her to feel peace in the midst of physical torture.

Invocation:

Compassion is the hallmark of St. Agatha. She will help you open your heart and find forgiveness so you can free yourself from the pain of the past. You can light a small white candle, say a simple prayer and know she will be there for you. She will show you how you can find peace and happiness in the midst of life’s traumas.

St. Agatha helps:

Overcome the emotional trauma of sexual assault

Prevent fires

Protect people during natural disasters

Defend torture victims

Heal breast disease

Find shelter during stormy weather

With love and aloha,

Susan

Since this is breast cancer awareness month I thought I would post about my favorite Saint, St. Agatha.
