{"id":551,"date":"2011-09-30T10:00:20","date_gmt":"2011-09-30T10:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/americainuniform\/?p=551"},"modified":"2011-09-15T14:37:04","modified_gmt":"2011-09-15T14:37:04","slug":"the-final-inspection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/americainuniform\/2011\/09\/the-final-inspection.html","title":{"rendered":"The Final Inspection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/americainuniform\/files\/2011\/09\/soldier2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-656\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/293\/2011\/09\/soldier2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>THE FINAL INSPECTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>by Joshua Helterbran<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Soldier stood and faced God,<br \/>\nWhich must always come to pass.<br \/>\nHe hoped his shoes were shining,<br \/>\nJust as brightly as his brass.<\/p>\n<p>Step forward now, Soldier ,<br \/>\nHow shall I deal with you?<br \/>\nHave you always turned the other cheek?<br \/>\nTo My Church have you been true?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The soldier squared his shoulders and said,<br \/>\n&#8216;No, Lord, I guess I ain&#8217;t.<br \/>\nBecause those of us who carry guns,<br \/>\nCan&#8217;t always be a saint.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had to work most Sundays,<br \/>\nAnd at times my talk was tough.<br \/>\nAnd sometimes I&#8217;ve been violent,<br \/>\nBecause the world is awfully rough.<\/p>\n<p>But, I never took a penny,<br \/>\nThat wasn&#8217;t mine to keep&#8230;<br \/>\nThough I worked a lot of overtime,<br \/>\nWhen the bills got just too steep.<\/p>\n<p>And I never passed a cry for help,<br \/>\nThough at times I shook with fear.<br \/>\nAnd sometimes, God, forgive me,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve wept unmanly tears.<\/p>\n<p>I know I don&#8217;t deserve a place,<br \/>\nAmong the people here.<br \/>\nThey never wanted me around,<br \/>\nExcept to calm their fears.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve a place for me here, Lord,<br \/>\nIt needn&#8217;t be so grand.<br \/>\nI never expected or had too much,<br \/>\nBut if you don&#8217;t, I&#8217;ll understand.<\/p>\n<p>There was a silence all around the throne,<br \/>\nWhere the saints had often trod.<br \/>\nAs the Soldier waited quietly,<br \/>\nFor the judgment of his God.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Step forward now, you Soldier,<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve borne your burdens well.<br \/>\nWalk peacefully on Heaven&#8217;s streets,<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve done your time in Hell.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Author Unknown<\/strong>~ (attributed in several of the postings that have been circulating)<\/p>\n<p>Joshua wrote a Part II in order to clear up any confusion as to who was the author of<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Final Inspection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Part II &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m very saddened by America today,<br \/>\nwhen they take credit for what others say.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote a poem because of problems in my past,<br \/>\nhow was I to know that it was going to last.<\/p>\n<p>It has been read by all and loved the same,<br \/>\nbut indeed at the end there is no name.<\/p>\n<p>The name is simple for those who know,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s not Kilmer, Longfellow, Service, or Poe.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a soldier who has fought for his country so true,<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s proud of the ole Red, White and Blue.<\/p>\n<p>You now know the poem the one and the same,<br \/>\nThe Final Inspection is the name.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote it because of the trials so true,<br \/>\nand of my buddies who died for country and you.<\/p>\n<p>So take this poem, take it as you trod,<br \/>\nbecause in Heaven I&#8217;ll see my God.<\/p>\n<p>He will look at me and say don&#8217;t be sad,<br \/>\nothers read your poem and you made them glad.<\/p>\n<p>Now step forward my son and look your best,<br \/>\nand come inside with all the rest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>by:\u00a0 Sgt Joshua Helterbran<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Notes:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a small bio Joshua kindly permitted me [the webmaster of VetsTribute.com] to publish and a note from his Mom about the wonderful poem:<\/p>\n<p>I entered military service September 18, 1996 I graduated from Basic Training in Ft. Benning, Ga. I then attended Jump School there, and went on to attend R.I.P (ranger indoctrination program). I was then stationed with Aco 3rd Platoon, Weapons Squad, 3rd Ranger Battalion. I then was stationed with the 1\/508th ABCT, 173rd Brigade in Vincenza, Italy. I am currently stationed with HHC 224th Engineer Battalion. We were on deployment in Iraq, when I was injured. I am currently stationed at Ft. Sill, OK where I am receiving medical treatment. Thank you again for all you have done for us troops.
