{"id":358,"date":"2011-11-02T06:25:49","date_gmt":"2011-11-02T06:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/aliteraryspirit\/?p=358"},"modified":"2011-10-27T22:36:51","modified_gmt":"2011-10-27T22:36:51","slug":"big-fat-lies-women-tell-themselves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/aliteraryspirit\/2011\/11\/big-fat-lies-women-tell-themselves.html","title":{"rendered":"Big Fat Lies Women Tell Themselves by Amy Ahlers"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"644\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"4\" align=\"center\" valign=\"middle\" width=\"263\" height=\"200\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/aliteraryspirit\/files\/2011\/10\/images-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-345\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/aliteraryspirit\/files\/2011\/10\/images-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/301\/2011\/08\/3stars.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/301\/2011\/08\/3stars.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a>Purchase <a href=\"http:\/\/store.beliefnet.com\/amazon_store\/item\/1608680282\">Big Fat Lies<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/store.inspiredfaith.com\/storefront.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Beliefnet Shopping Mall<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"375\"><big>Big Fat Lies Women Tell Themselves<\/big>By Amy Ahlers<\/p>\n<p><strong>Review<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>In this insightful book, Amy Ahlers basically lays out all of the destructive lies that women tell themselves (or are indirectly told or influenced by in our society).\u00a0 The lies are numerous and diverse.\u00a0 Lies about relationships (You\u2019re not complete without a man), money (You\u2019ll be happy when you have more) or our bodies (You\u2019re not healthy unless you\u2019re slim) all seem to affect women at some point in their lives.\u00a0 Since the book covers every category of lies imaginable, it\u2019s hard not to find at least a handful of lies that you\u2019re still telling yourself.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I was initially taken aback when I read the book.\u00a0 After decades of self-reflection and inner work, I thought I was lie-free.\u00a0 But there were many lies that still rang true\u2014and that I had to sit down and reflect during my reading.<\/p>\n<p>Ahlers also offers clear, simple and practical advice for each lie that women tell ourselves.\u00a0 I liked the advice but I found the advice uneven\u2014some chapters included very helpful stories from the authors life and others were a few paragraphs of useful (but seemingly generic) wisdom.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite parts of the book were the quotes scattered throughout the book which are mainly penned by women.\u00a0 I have never seen such a handsome collection of women\u2019s wisdom (for women, by women) and I often found myself noting the author of the quote\u2019s name and hoping to learn more about her.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, I really liked this book.\u00a0 The prose is clear, her suggestions are direct and Ahlers clearly has first-hand experience with many of these lies\u2014her writing voice rings with authority and wisdom.<br \/>\nTo get the most out of this book, then use each chapter as an invitation to reflect more deeply on the lies you may be telling yourself, why it still works and how to create and reinforce a different truth.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend this book to women of all ages.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Purchase Big Fat Lies from the Beliefnet Shopping Mall.
