<\/strong><\/strong>A Child\u2019s Book of Animal Poems and Blessings<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Collected by<\/strong> Eliza Blanchard and Illustrated by <\/strong>Joyce Hesselberth<\/p>\n

<\/strong>Review:<\/strong> Having created a book of blessings myself, I was eager to see what Eliza Blanchard had decided to include in this collection of animal poems and blessings for children.<\/p>\n

The book opens with a very sweet blessing penned by Lynn Warren.\u00a0 It was short enough to hold a child\u2019s attention at the dinner table\u2014no easy feat.\u00a0 But the subsequent poems and blessings in this collection were hit and miss.\u00a0 Some were far too long, and others were written in a style largely inaccessible to a young child.<\/p>\n

I also struggled with the use of this book.\u00a0 I wanted to use it at the dinner table every night to inspire us to say grace in new ways.\u00a0 But the blessings and poems are interspersed and hard to find on short notice.\u00a0 And the book didn\u2019t work as a children\u2019s poetry book either\u2014because the presence of blessings seem to interrupt our flow of poetry reading.<\/p>\n

What I really liked about the book was the illustrations.\u00a0 The color palette\u2014a range of soft, dusty blues paired with powdery yellows and greens\u2014was pleasing to my daughter\u2019s eye.\u00a0 And the graphic designs were fabulous\u2014we loved Hesselberth\u2019s contemporary interpretations of a bat, a kitten and flying birds.
\nRecommended for: <\/strong>This book is a wonderful gift for parents and poets. I believe that children under the age of 10 would be most delighted with this collection of poems and blessings.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
