Margaret Whitton was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and made her debut off-Broadway in 1973. She moved on to Broadway and starred in “Steaming” with Judith Ivey. In the 1989 hit comedy movie “Major League,” Whitton played Rachel Phelps, a former Las Vegas showgirl who becomes the owner of the Cleveland Indians. Whitton also starred with Terri Garr in a 1991 sitcom called “Good & Evil.” She moved on to directing plays and directed her first movie in 2011 with “A Bird of the Air.” Whitton died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 4, at her home in Palm Beach, Florida, after a brief battle with cancer.
