Mae Whitman is an actress. She first became known as a child actor, starring in movies like "When a Man Loves a Woman,” "One Fine Day,” "Independence Day," and "Hope Floats." She also starred in the TV series "Chicago Hope" and "JAG." Whitman earned mainstream recognition for her performances in the sitcoms "Arrested Development" and "Parenthood," for which she was nominated for a Critic's Choice Television Award, and the NBC crime comedy series "Good Girls."

She's also had roles in "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," and "The DUFF," the latter earning her a Teen Choice Award nomination. Whitman started her career at two years old in a voice-over for a Tyson Chicken commercial. Because she couldn't read yet, acting coach Anthony Magarian helped her memorize lines. When she was five, she made her film debut alongside Meg Ryan in "When a Man Loves a Woman," playing Ryan's youngest daughter, Casey Green. She was chosen for the role over 700 other girls who auditioned. In 1996, she appeared in two movies, "Independence Day," playing Bill Pullman's daughter Patricia Whitmore, and "One Fine Day," as George Clooney's daughter Maggie Taylor. The same year, she guest starred in the season three episode of "Friends," "The One Where Rachel Quits." Between 1996 and 1998, she starred in 17 episodes of "Chicago Hope."

Later, she played Sandra Bullock's daughter, Bernice Pruitt, in "Hope Floats." Whitman played the role of Chloe Madison on "JAG" in several guest appearances from 1998 to 2001 before starring in the Fox Family series "State of Grace." In that series, she played Grace, a girl from a Catholic background who befriends a Jewish girl. From 2004 to 2006, Whitman had a recurring role on "Arrested Development." She also voiced Katara on "Avatar: The Last Airbender" from 2005 to 2008. She appeared in "Thief" for FX Networks, playing the stepdaughter of Nick Atwater. She also appeared on "Desperate Housewives" in the episode "Nice She Ain't" as Sarah, a friend of Julie Mayer.
