Uma Thurman is a former model and actress. She’s performed in various films, from dramas to science fiction, romantic comedies, and action films. After appearing on the December 1985 and May 1986 covers of British Vogue, Thurman starred in “Dangerous Liaisons.” She rose to fame with her performance as Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film “Pulp Fiction,” which earned her an Academy Award nomination. She reunited with the director to play the lead role in “Kill Bill: Volume 1” and its sequel, bringing her two Golden Globe Award nominations.

Thurman’s other notable films include, “Henry & June,” “The Truth About Cats & Dogs,” “Batman & Robin,” “Gattaca,” “Paycheck,” “My Super Ex-Girlfriend,” and “Hollywood Stargirl.” In 2011, Thurman was a member of the jury for the main competition at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. She made her Broadway debut in “The Parisian Woman” in 2017. Thurman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Film for her performance in “Hysterical Blindness” and received a Primetime Emmy nomination for her role in “Smash.”

She also starred in the miniseries “The Slap” and the series “Imposters,” “Chambers,” and “Super Pumped.” Thurman was born in 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father, Robert Thurman, is a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies and an author who lived as an ordained Buddhist monk for three years. She received a Buddhist upbringing and spent around two years in Almora, a town in the Northern-Indian state of Uttarakhand. Thurman grew up mostly in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she attended Amherst Regional Junior High School before moving to Woodstock, New York.

In a 2004 biography, Thurman is described as having been an introverted and awkward girl who was teased for her unusual name and appearance, sometimes using the name Uma Karen instead of her birth name. When she was 10 years old, a friend’s mother suggested a nose job, causing her to suffer bouts of body dysmorphic disorder. In eighth grade, she discovered her love of acting, and at 14, she was offered the chance to act professionally, dropping out to pursue an acting career.

What religion is Uma Thurman?

Although Thurman was brought up in a Buddhist household, she says she doesn’t practice or preach it, considering herself agnostic. The actress said, “When asked if I consider myself Buddhist, the answer is, it’s more my religion than any other because I was brought up with it in an intellectual and spiritual environment. I don’t practice or preach it, however. But Buddhism has had a major effect on who I am and how I think about the world. What I have learned is that I like all religions, but only parts of them.”
