John Smoltz, nicknamed “Smoltzie” and “Marmaduke,” was an All-State baseball and football player in his home state of Michigan before he joined the minor leagues. He played in the minor leagues for three years before he was called up the major leagues. In 1992, he helped take the Braves to the World Series. The following year, he was the MVP of the National League Championship Series. In 2000, he underwent Tommy John surgery. He recovered and went on to be a dominating closer in 2002. His number, 29, was retired by the Braves in 2012, three years after his retirement.
