“Mr. Spock” was born in Boston to Ukrainian immigrants, and began acting at a young age. He worked at an ice cream parlor to pay for drama classes at Boston College. After a brief sting in the U.S. Army Reserve, he returned to college and spent the next several years taking small parts, including a minor television role.

Nimoy fought demons of alcoholism, and felt the “deeply logical, less emotional” mindset of the role of his most notable character, the half-Vulcan, half-human, dominating his personal life. He embraced method acting – his mentor was Marlon Brando – and spent up to 14 hours each day in “Spock” mode, so much so that he noticed his “Spock” habits more than his own.

Leonard Nimoy was also an active recording artist, with a range of work from singing as Spock to covers of Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” to Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line”, and appeared in Bruno Mars’ video for “The Lazy Song”.
