Rachel McAdams is an actress. After graduating from a theatre program at York University in 2001, she worked in Canadian film and television productions, like the drama movie "Perfect Pie," which earned her a Genie Award nomination. She also worked on the comedy film "My Name is Tanino" and the television series "Slings and Arrows," which earned her a Gemini Award.

McAdams made her Hollywood debut in 2002 with the comedy film "The Hot Chick." In 2004, she rose to fame in the cult classic "Mean Girls" and the romantic drama "The Notebook." The following year, she starred in the films "Wedding Crashers," "Red Eye," and "The Family Stone." The media hailed her as Hollywood's new "it girl" and received a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Rising Star. After a brief sabbatical, McAdams returned to prominence in 2009 after appearing in "State of Play,” "The Time Traveler's Wife," and "Sherlock Holmes."

In 2010, she appeared in "Morning Glory,” "Midnight in Paris,” "The Vow," and "About Time." In 2015, she starred in the second HBO series "True Detective" and played journalist Sacha Pfeiffer in "Spotlight." She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the latter. These films were followed by roles in "Doctor Strange" and its sequel "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” "Disobedience," and "Game Night." McAdams' most recent role was in "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret," and she's set to make her Broadway debut next year in Amy Herzog's "Mary Jane."

McAdams developed an interest in performing when she was seven, and while her parents didn't discourage her, they didn't encourage her either. She attended William Shakespeare and Disney summer camps as a child. From age 12, she participated in Original Kids Theatre Company, London productions, and directed children's theatre productions in her late teens.

What religion is Rachel McAdams?

McAdams was born in 1978 in London, Ontario, Canada. She grew up in a Protestant household. The eldest of three children, she has a younger sister, Kayleen, and a younger brother named Daniel. While filming "Spotlight," McAdams discussed her religion, saying, "I had one particularly religious grandmother, and I couldn't help thinking while I was playing this part how this scandal would have rocked her faith, had she been alive at the time. I was thinking, 'How would I have broken that to her?' So, the issue became a little personal for me that way. But I don't subscribe to any one particular religion. I would probably lean closest to Buddhism if I had to pick one, though I've never declared one over the other."
