John Friend
Respected yoga instructor, founder of Anusara yoga, spiritual teacher

John Friend is the founder of Anusara yoga, a system of yoga whose Sanskrit name means "flowing with grace," "going with the flow," or "following your heart." Friend was first introduced to yoga in 1967 at the age of 8 by his mother, Ann Friend, when she read him stories of yogis who had supernatural powers and hidden knowledge of the mysteries of life. He began studying yoga when he was 13 years old. He studied mostly Iyengar yoga with teachers like Patabhi Jois. In 1989, Friend went to Pune, India to study with B.K.S. Iyengar and subsequently served on the board of directors for the Iyengar Yoga National Association for four years. In 1989, Friend met Gurumayi Chidvilasananda at her ashram in Ganeshpuri, India. She introduced him to the practice of Siddha yoga. Through Gurumayi's direction, Friend learned and practiced devotional chanting, japa, Hindu puja, seva, ethical precepts, meditation and intricacies on hatha yoga.

In 1997 Friend founded Anusara yoga, now one of the fastest-growing forms of yoga in North America. The highest intention of Anusara yoga is to align with the divine and step into the "flow of grace." On the mat, students are encouraged to be playful and light and to offer prayers for more beauty, love, and goodness in the world. From 1991 to 2005 Friend taught over 350 workshops, retreats, and trainings throughout North America, Mexico, Australia, Italy, and Holland, as well as at large national yoga conferences in the United States. He lives in the Woodlands, Texas.
