Use Hot or Cold Packs
Applying cold to an inflamed joint can reduce pain and swelling by numbing the area and constricting blood vessels. Applying heat can soothe aching joints and also relax muscles. Experiment to see what works best in different situations. A bag of frozen peas or corn works great as a cold pack. For heat, you can apply a heating pad, hot water bottle, or microwaveable hot pack, or you can soak in a whirlpool or warm bath. To stay safe, don’t apply a hot or frozen compress for more than 20 minutes at a time.
