Leprosy was a terrible scourge throughout Europe during the Dark Ages with as many as 1 out of 30 people affected. It appears repeatedly in the Bible, such as the miraculous healing of Syrian commander Naaman and the curing of ten lepers Jesus encountered in the countryside. God proved Himself at the Burning Bush by ordering Moses to put his hand inside his cloak, then pull it out. When he did, his hand was covered with leprosy. God then told him to do it again – and this time, Moses was clean. The demonstration was repeated when Moses appeared before Pharaoh to demand freedom for the Hebrew slaves.
