As residents of Newtown continue to recover from the December school shooting, religious leaders address the role of forgiveness in the healing process. “Forgiveness acknowledges the transgression, but then it says, but grace is available,” said the Rev. James Forbes, Jr., president of Healing of the Nations Foundation. Forgiveness, however, does not happen over night, said the Rev. Matthew Crebbin, senior minister of Newtown Congregational Church. “That’s our calling as Christians, but it's not always a simple process,” he said. Members of Crebbin’s congregation lit 28 candles, commemorating all those who died in the shooting, including the shooter, Adam Lanza.
