Episcopal Diocese Asks Courts to Evict Breakaway Congregations

RICHMOND, Virginia, Jan. 31 - Episcopalian leaders are asking courts around the state to evict breakaway conservative congregations from church buildings.

Wednesday's move comes more than a month after the churches began voting to part ways with The Episcopal Church, citing disagreements with the American denomination's liberal views on homosexuality.

The breakaway churches say they will instead align with the Convocation of Anglicans in North America, established by Nigeria's conservative Anglican Archbishop Peter Akinola.

A spokesman for the breakaway churches said church properties are held in trust by members of the congregations.

But it is the diocese's view that the properties are held in trust on behalf of The Episcopal Church and the diocese of Virginia, said Patrick Getlein, the secretary of the diocese.

Lawyers for seven of the breakaway congregations filed a motion at the state Supreme Court on Monday, asking that the property disputes be consolidated.
